Brock Beard put this up today, it's basically a recap of the race and the chat room he frequented at the time. Striking how similar it is to how our thread here progressed, shock, bad jokes, bad rumours, anger and all. For me it even legitemises how we experienced this event here; I found the comparison to transcripts of operators transcribing word of JFK's assassination pretty interesting. Well worth a watch.

It was already posted few posts above  But that was a good idea with that chat room, same stuff was during Besweet stream chat

Not sure I've seen it reported elsewhere, but Ericsson has everything signed and confirmed for 2022. He also intends to race at the Daytona 24 hours (which seems likely).

I remember waking up for breakfast that morning before work (race was early hours of a Monday morning here in Australia) and seeing the cars roll out for the 5 lap tribute having no idea what was going on until Marty Reid's sign off......

Couple of documentaries that I found pop up on YouTube today about the Vegas weekend. First one features a lot of build up to the race, the 5 million dollar challenge and other events during the Vegas week as well as the accident and aftermath, second one is more focused on the race itself and what it was like in an active chat room before, during and after the fateful moment.
I'll put it in spoiler tags as both videos do include the accident and replays.
*WARNING* Videos contain footage of fatal accident and aftermath *WARNING*
Spoiler:

Finally watched both. "The perfect storm" was really, really well done and showed just how senseless the race was and how apprehensive and scared the drivers seemed after practice and qually. Some of the stuff drivers were saying in the lead up to it seems so crazy with hindsight. The one that really got me was Randy talking about Travis Pastrana right before introducing Wheldon as the driver taking up the $5M challenge. Dan then says "Please don't expect any flips like Travis does, cause I'm not into that. I'm gonna keep it on all 4" :(

Pruett has now spun this one out into a full article based on an interview with Cusick; https://racer.com/2021/10/19/cusick-set ... r-program/

90% sure that they are going to confirm DeFrancesco and troll all the people expecting an announcement re: Sauber.

EDIT: lol, it was even more low-key than that; https://racer.com/2021/10/20/avalanche- ... e-sponsor/

Next time they announce an announcement it'll probably be that Michael is officially heading over to Europe......

To wave the start flag at the Le Mans 24 hours :whistling:

Just watched the 'Perfect Storm' video. It's so sad to hear some of the comments before the race (especially Dan's about keeping all four wheels on the ground). It's also the first time I've seen his onboard camera going all the way into the wreck. Never thought that had been aired before. Very good documentary, but still hard to watch at times, even after 10 years.

The Autonomous Challenge ran at IMS this past day and the winner did a lap of just under 125mph. Pretty impressive.

Almost as fast as the Lotus cars of 2012 :8:

Sargeant withdrew after signing a contract with Williams for next year, but the other 4 (plus Hulkenberg) carried out their test. Malukas ended up on top.

20 years from now, TBK hates the fact these analogue drivers can only do 225mph laps of Indy when an autonomous vehicle can do 380mph laps and have spectacular crashes that kill no-one.

I honestly wonder if driver less crashes will have will create the same fascination as "conventional crashes". After all it's not that one can choose what they are fascinated by.
I could watch a wrecking ball demolishing a house. Great damage but doesn't interest me much.

it will be the same sensation we had when we used to simulate high speed crashes on our hot wheels or when we forced big crashes in those Playstation F1 games by racing backwards to see what kind shit would happen

still fun though, despite material damage be quite expensive in that case

i think the popularity of sending robots to beat the crap out of each other mostly answers this question. We like thing go boom.

It's a different entertainment. Human performances involve a whole layer of psychology and backstory that will be inexistent with these machines. At least not until they develop consciousness, in which case they would be unique human-like entities that can outsmart each other, doubt, suffer, feel joy and pain (or can even be lost irreversibly) and we're back to square one as with our flesh and blood drivers of today.
