still not officially official at least - but when network TV comes calling the tracks are gonna take it over being one of the USA (cable) / Peacock (online-only) races

if that schedule doesn't change - here's the big conflicts with NBC's NASCAR Cup slate - as neither track is able to run at night.
Mid-Ohio - (Cup at Road America)
Toronto - (Cup at New Hampshire)
Nashville Streets - (Cup at Michigan)

I left off Iowa (has lights, so no way in hell it conflicts with Pocono), Portland (Darlington will most certainly run at night) and Laguna Seca (this will most certainly be a NBC race being the finale)

guessing Mid-Ohio has a early start like this year & is used as a lead-in for the Cup race at Road America later that afternoon.

the street races typically run later so I can't see them not conflicting at some point.

The thing that's most annoying is it seems they've heard our complaints about the early finish to the season and said "We hear what you're saying, how does a 3 week EARLIER season finish for 2022 grab ya?"

Not like they're starting that much earlier to make up either :slaphead:

I feel like we are constantly on the cusp of a true IndyCar renascence but the series can't stop aiming a shotgun at it's feet. Thankfully they haven't quite pulled the trigger yet.

official schedule out tomorrow

the teaser is suggesting that Detroit goes back to 1 race, and that Iowa is the only doubleheader weekend of the year.

it's really only 1 weekend earlier compared to this year - Long Beach doesn't count because it was postponed due to COVID

also starting 2 weeks earlier now with St. Pete essentially now between the end of Speedweeks and the start of Bike Week

TBell inadvertently confirmed that Pagenaud is headed for the door during today's broadcast.

Glad that Detroit is a single race, but they could have kept the doubleheader at Texas or do one at gateway. Ovals are still underrepresented in the schedule.
Oh, and I want Pocono back. And Michigan. And Cleveland. And most importantly Eurospeedway. Kthxby

I feel like Indycar's done a great job at growing the car count, but I think the schedule's the next thing they need to work on. IMS road course could go and I wouldn't miss it.

Yeah two races at the Indy road course? Come on...

Even one is too much.

Are the Cleveland politicians still butthurt about the IRL/CART split? Because that apparently was the reason they didn't pick it up after 2007. :whistling:

Weren't they wanted to try the F1 circuit at Indy? Would probably be a better look, doing the oval T1 again.

And I can't blame Cleveland. Switching from V8 turbocharged monsters to the Crapwagons of those years? Probably without anything remotely close to a ROI?

Current cars race great and would do a hell of a show at Cleveland. Now it's the time to return.

Given that series owner Roger Penske owns Indy, it's kind of a "freebie". So this helped during COVID cancellations to meet race count (three races at the IMS road course in 2020 was a bit much :p but if that was what was needed...).

Then the 2020 NASCAR / Indy cross-promotion in July 2020 I guess worked well enough for them to want to continue to have Indycar run the road course on the Brickyard date.

If Penske owned Nazareth and MIS still, you'd probably see some stuff scheduled there (as they were in the good ol' CART days). But he doesn't, Nazareth is gone, and MIS is half devoted to country music festivals and Christmas light shows these days. :p

Ovals are in a weird spot right now. It even seems ovals are in decline in oval-heavy NASCAR, and even on NASCAR ovals the trend is shorter ovals (eg the proposed Fontana reconfiguration) or other gimmicks (Bristol dirt? Clash in a 1/4 mile stadium circuit?).

Worse for Indycar is that, despite the above, most ovals do bend to NASCAR's will first. So you get things like PJ1 at Texas and Phoenix being re-profiled in a way that suits NASCAR way more than Indycar. The rumor mill is that ISC keeps shooting down Homestead and Richmond even though in theory both would fit Indycar quite well (I think).

I'd love to see Cleveland back but the first thing I Google about Burke is that (shades of Edmonton?) the airport's future itself is kind of in flux.

Kentucky is completely raceless at this point and I would love to see IndyCar back now that it’s been repaved. With no NASCAR events it also has the benefit of no PJ1. But I wonder if it’s just too redundant from a geographical standpoint (three Indianapolis races, one in Ohio, one in Nashville).

Man, fuck ISC if the Richmond info is true! I mean, they had a deal in principal for 2020 before Covid, so WTF is their problem now? I'll just go there after work one day with a boom box and stand there blaring Delta Force or Back Home Again like John Cusack...

NASCAR probably wants a full track rental deal now where they have no responsibilities to promote the event like what they got with Iowa

like the first thing that pops up on Iowa's track website is that they won't have any NASCAR dates in 2022, with a image / FAQ about the IndyCar event that has links redirecting to IndyCar's website below it

As expected, Ilott secures himself a full time ride for next year.

RACER has also learned that if enough sponsorship and the right mechanical and engineering staff can be acquired, JHR is also interested in fielding a second entry next season with a veteran IndyCar driver to guide and mentor Ilott through his introduction to oval racing and the numerous venues he’ll visit for the first time.

Sato is being linked to the #51 for next year as Nurtec are interested in having a Japanese driver to promote their product.
