The second week of Monterey Speed Week at WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca features the return of IndyCars in the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey - this being the season finale for the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season. 4 drivers have a chance at winning the championship, with Josef Newgarden leading over Alexander Rossi, Simon Pagenaud & a long-shot chance for Scott Dixon. Laguna Seca sees it's first IndyCar race since the 2004 Champ Car season - which was won by Patrick Carpentier, only since the track has seen pre-season testing in 2007 & this year. Supporting the race weekend includes all 3 tiers of the Road to Indy (Indy Lights, Indy Pro 2000 Championship & the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship), IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA presented by Yokohama & the Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup.

I wonder why the IMSA didn't race here the same weekend, seems pointless having two events back to back which likely pull the same fans

apparently was a mixture of the promoters, the city (who owns the track), NASCAR (IMSA) and IndyCar not able to come to terms. I remember some reports last year when the IndyCar schedule & IMSA schedule came out saying the city had a cheaper cost with this "Speed Week" format - which does make sense for vendors & other setup costs, apparently sanctioning fees was lower too (rumor, not entirely sure).

I'd say Laguna already pulled alot of fans from not attending by their stupidly high priced tickets though. General admission for Sunday is $120, add that on the fact that Monterey is a higher priced area for just about everything (hotels, food, whatever) compared to Sears Point & it hurts for sure. I have about 4 or 5 friends that would go to Sears Point each year for IndyCar that aren't going this year because of these reasons alone (some local & some that traveled up from LA)

In comparison of other general admission tickets: for under half of the cost, you can watch the 500 in the infield berms.

Let us not forget Gonzalo Rodriguez though. It's been twenty years (and seven days) now. 1999 was a hard year for Penske.

That's harsh to lose your two fastest laps for a spin in quali.

Paddock space might be an issue and IMSA would have to drop their support schedule too.

There was a report (pre IMSA race) that ticket sales were up. https://racer.com/2019/09/05/laguna-rep ... d-indycar/
