I was watching Clios at Most earlier. That track's first corner is basically a tighter version of Portland's and they didn't have as many cars crashing there, even with a bigger field. I thought Indycar drivers were professionals?

The track is the same for everyone, it's just the knuckleheads trying to take too much out of the early stages of the race that ruin it for everyone else
