I can see already, drivers going all-in trying to qualify for the 500, increased boost and using the KERS in the straight in the last couple of laps, to compensate for the drop of speed in the corners.

I see cars threatening the track record in quaifying.

Or am I dreaming too much?

How would the energy even get harvested on an oval like Indy? Isn't all energy gathered through braking/deceleration?

wouldn't they apply the concept that Nissan tried in their last Le Mans try. Flywheels charging the system so they can activate on straights

If they really give them 900+ hp and make the wings even smaller, it might be possible that they have to lift/break/harvest in traffic and towards the end of the stints. I would like that very much.

In a slipstream, you could use some of the engine power towards filling up a battery while keeping the same top speed. Won't be as fast as a full braking/lift-off, but could be enough to charge over several laps then unleash it to make a move. This is of course, if the driver isn't also trying to save fuel.

I thought the same thing, that's why I said qualifying, assuming they'd start a run with full batteries.

This vid was posted about a month ago and kinda relates here. It's about Williams batteryless hybrid system which of course used flywheels. It was never used in F1 but, considering this technology is now over a decade old, something similar to this may be cost effective for indycar.

Huh? I bet Honda loves Sato more than Hinch though?

Rahal is growing to 3 cars.

Or Honda could shovel their money in Shank's direction.

It depends on what you want, really. McLaren could have fielded one or two cars by themselves - but as they would have had to have been a Chevy team, there would have been no technical alliance with anyone, which would mean they would simply be adding 2 cars to the midfield at best.

A bigger problem (not a big problem in absolute terms) for Indycar this year than car count has been the widening of the gap between the top 3 teams and everyone else. By McLaren coming in this way, there is a greater chance of turning SPM back into a front-running team, assuming they hire the right drivers.

I personally think 22 full-time cars is fine, 24 would be optimum, and any more would be welcome but you would start running into capacity problems.

so for McLaren they want to cut corners, even if you must burn bridges for that

I think it's a bit poor to turn up at a bigger oval such as Pocono with anything less that 26 and you should be pushing Indy 500 levels of car count for the bigger tracks, just because the less cars you get there, the less excitement there is

Bigger fields add excitement and challenge no matter what the type of course though, imagine over 30 cars at a place like Iowa? That'd be like an old school, huge field cramming into a bull ring like Pheonix we got in the late 80s to Mid nineties. A true driving challenge.

Plus I don't really want Mclaren to turn up and blitz the field anyway.
If they're going to win in Indycar, they have to do it the hard way, learn their lessons and slog their way to the front over a few seasons.
Mclaren coming in and being the Indycar Mercedes and running 1-2 every race next year won't do Indycar's reputation any favours
(as unlikely as that is anyway with juggernaughts like Penske around)

I'm OK with McLaren being able to challenge the big 3.

I don't think McLaren will challenge the big 3.
