^^ either that or Indycar is run by a bunch of people who don't get the "social media generation".

I know my niece was horrified today that I didn't have Twitter or anything like that and that nearly everything 'social' on my phone was turned off meaning she had to type in her number instead of just tapping the phone. I'm the age of most Indycar top brass, so...
I'm starting to turn away from alot of it myself, and I'm only 35, so don't feel too bad.

My concern is because it's not just Indycar officials not passing along more detailed information, but no one is. It doesn't have to even be social media neophytes at Indycar to pass on details, there's plenty of folks closer to Wicky Bobby and his team who could/would pass on the info. His fiancee, who I just discovered today is a fairly popular pro cosplayer on Instagram, has been pouring her heart out on there all day but hasn't said much other than an ominous plea for him to push through it.

There was a post on Reddit yesterday that indicated rather matter of factly that his stated condition would drastically change sometime after the race, by someone on there who was not a regular Indycar poster and who in the past let slip they are an EMT in that area. Thankfully when the update came it wasn't dire, but the vagueness still leads me to believe that the EMT had seen or heard something we haven't, couldn't say it for HIPPA/common decency reasons, but is right that something more serious is wrong with him than what they have felt comfortable in reporting.

The language has gone from a fractured vertebrae, which kind of implies that it is a back issue but that happens to people all the time and with some rest and care are fine, to the language changing to a spinal injury, which implies that it is way way more serious.

Fear that he might be paralyzed, but I sincerely hope that I am wrong, and its "only" a fractured vertebrae.

Is just being patient and waiting for actual information still an option? We're so damn accustomed to seeing something everywhere online within 5 seconds of someone uttering it that when it doesn't happen we invent what the news might be or a conspiracy for why it hasn't been announced. Just going off of memory but the timeline and medical communications here don't seem that out of line with most recent racing injury situations. Would you prefer the Tiago Montiero approach where they invent a positive prognosis to appease everyone and hide the seriousness of the injuries? We know he's alive and conscious, maybe just try and get a grip until the rest of the medical details are known.

Totally agreeing with Phil here.

The doctors are controlling the information sharing at this point. They don't say anything else than the facts and that goes with family as well. A spinal injury is an injury on his spine, gravity of it has not being said since there probably isn't 100% certainty of how serious it can be said to be.

The hospital will follow their protocol and family cares more about getting the good news first and updating their social media first.

Would you like to speculated over your loved one's condition publicly in a situation like this or wait for some facts?

Paralysis can be caused by "only" a fractured vertebrae, it depends which vertebrae is fractured and we don't know that.

I don't like the language change here either which seems to imply the spinal injury is indeed more serious.

Look, if there's even a remote chance of something serious, doctors will tell this. Once they know all the facts, they will give that. The waiting in between is difficult, anyone been through this knows the feeling.

Vertebrae can be broken without paralysis. Paralysis can be temporary and it can certainly happen without broken vertebrae.

Please don't speculate when you have absolutely no facts of what's going on with Wickens.

I'm not speculating at all. I haven't even thought about paralysis as a potential outcome here but I'd pointed out a fact that a fractured vertebrae isn't such innocent as it may sound. I'm done talking about this accident and leave it to others. Over and out :flag:

Everyone just stay calm, which we all have been so far and I am quite glad to see. We all care about this sport and it's drivers and the desire to know what's going on shows this. We need not jump to conclusions, start projecting or start worrying about that which we do not know.

What we know is he has a broken right arm, broken ankles, bruised lung ad a spinal injury. He was scheduled for surgery on the spinal injury last night. Now we wait to hear the results.

Let's be positive and look forward to Robbie's return next year.

With luck, it will just be swelling.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Oof, I didn't realize there's a spinal cord injury as well. Fingers crossed for sure.

"Thoracic spinal fracture." Had to look that up. Most commonly it's a compression fracture of the T11/T12 vertebrae.

Initial hit into the wall was a terrible angle and that angle/impact, or the impact with the track when the car came off the catch fence, are the type of shocks that cause these sort of injuries.

Terrible deal all around. Long road to recovery.

To be fair, if Dillon's crash at Daytona a few years back was roof first. I think the safety cage of a stock car wouldn't be so proven. Hope it never happens (again, as it's happened & killed before), but they shouldn't be so sure about that.

Like Russell Philips you say?

Slightly going off track here but I always see these Russell Phillips (no one ever talks about Rodney Orr) comparisons and I just wonder if we hold modern cages to the same standard as those built over two decades ago. COT and Gen 6 stock cars keep going into the fences and the drivers always walk away. Indycars keep going into the fence and not often does the driver walk away without a scratch. Roof first, bottom first, feet first, scrotum first it doesn’t matter the driver is going to get hurt one way or another. The strength of a stock car cage and emphasis on the windshield area keeps us from repeating the mistakes of 20 something years ago.

Trying to think of open wheel drivers who've actually walked away from catchfence crashes. Kimball at Pocono is the only one that comes to mind.

And what’s his face at Indy last year, the one Indy likes to promote in all the commercials.

Dixon at Indy last year...

Both those cars went into the fence gearbox first.

Scott Pruett got into the catchfence at Indy in '95 with the gearbox as well.
