I was always under the impression the highest finishing rookie got the award regardless of what happens in the race. I guess they changed the rules at some point.

Did Kurt get Rookie honors when he did the double?

Yep, Ganassi and Sage Karam bitched about it.

Did they? He wasn't even driving for Ganassi in 2014. Also, he even finished three spots behind Busch.

Yeaa my bad, wrong team. But there was much bitching about him not being awarded it.

Maybe Ed Jones' post race attitude put off whoever decides RotY. Not sure if someone posted it here but he drove a significant part of the race with a damaged underside on the nose. He's obviously talented.

To be honest, Ed only really beat Alonso in one of those categories, and maaaaybe two. If they were genuinely two apiece, of course Alonso would be chosen for the publicity, but I don't think it was the case.

It's always been a media vote, which means it isn't the highest finisher all the time.

Other examples that come to mind include 1983 (Teo Fabi got it for the poll, but dropped out early; Al Unser Jr., who finished tenth, lost to Fabi) and 1966 (Graham Hill was an Indy 500 "rookie" and won the race, yet lost RotY to fellow "rookie" Jackie Stewart who dropped out while leading the race on the 191st lap.)

I had pushed it to the back of my mind until accidentally thinking about how air and rail travel seems to work on the basis of cramming yourself (and others) inside someone else's body 8O

Indy 500’s national TV numbers worst in 31 years of live coverage

The Alonso effect also didn't help in Brazil, where I think is Indy's second largest tv audience:
https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comme ... omparison/

It had a massive boost in the UK and Spain but that's because it was a tiny audience to grow from. The audience on the UK was still lower than a typical MotoGP or BTCC race or even LM:
https://f1broadcasting.co/2017/05/29/al ... 0-viewers/

No matter the appealing effect that they might have( as Alonso, this year), I guess the format of oval racing will always face this comment on reddit:
Quote:
Or maybe it dropped because watching cars turning left for hours is kinda boring, even when a former F1 world champion is participating.

The first time I knew about Indy 500 was in the 90s and, IIRC, they reached over 400km/h back then and this figure was used almost in a fallic way to hype the series. I could never even remotely like it, though. It's like a perfect example of monotony to me, ie, the same thing over and over. It's like watching a .gif looping every 10s.
