IndyCar just announced their plan for cockpit protection. And... it's basically a halo combined with a windscreen. Sigh. https://www.indycar.com/News/2019/05/05 ... nouncement

Without some sort of structure anchored to the chassis they couldn't get the windscreen alone to withstand the testing. Unfortunate. This contraption makes the car look bulky and very much like a duck.

That looks perfect, it *will* save the life of one driver at some point in the future.

I have a better plan that will save countless lives in the future: I suggest the 33 drivers sit around a lovely cup of tea this sunday. Why go out there on the track? It's stormy anyways.

If you don't agree, you're a heartless bastard who does not care about human life for their selfish entertainment.

Why oh why they didn't just stick with the windscreen? Now how's the drivers' vision NOT blocked compared to halo, which was a problem for ovals before? :yuk:

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

funny that they didn't even tested on track at full speed to see if it's ok. is being pushed down the throat like they always do

Per this article:
Quote:
“One of the options was to, and this was Dallara’s suggestion, just to go to the regular FIA Halo,” Belli continued. “So we tested the Halo for visuals on the Dallara simulator, because there was concern that on the high banked speedways, the Halo would obscure the vision. So we ran with Scott Dixon and on the Dallara simulator with a standard FIA Halo, and to our surprise, it didn’t obscure any visions in any way. But when we came to do the stress test on the tub, this current tub couldn’t sustain the loads of the FIA Halo in the back corner of the cockpit opening, which made us revisit some of our other thoughts.”

Affixed to every custom F1 chassis atop the cockpit’s sidewalls, the Halo proved unsuitable for mounting in the same manner on the DW12, which was never designed to accept crushing vertical loads in those locations.

“So we then said, ‘Hey, you know, where are the strong points on the tub,’ and we said, ‘Well, the base of the roll hoop is strong,’ and later, we put in the strong point for the AFP on the front, and so we said, ‘Well, why don’t we make our windscreen with a top frame mount to those points?’ Belli said.

So basically they just assumed the halo would block oval vision, but they never bothered to actually test it out and see if that was true. :slaphead:

Because the windscreen broke when large enough objects were tossed at it.

The concerns over visibility were overstated, but you can clearly see that the ring of the frame is higher up relative to the driver than the halo's ring is. The frame also has the advantage of being thinner than the halo as the frame is not supposed to deflect objects, unlike the halo.

The final design could be different as whoever builds the prototypes may find that they can make it even more sleek. If they can't, then it's something that they can address when the new chassis is commissioned.

Honestly don't think it looks that bad. Looks better than that goofy F1 Halo

don't forget that the tubs with the halo will get more expensive

We've already had a spin and a mechanical problem and the race hasn't even started yet
