Doesn't ring a bell. Where did he recount this story?

39 minutes in. It's not particularly pleasant.

Not pleasant at all. There's a real unsettling detail that PT mentions about Dan when he knew he was gone.

That was such an awful day. It's ridiculous they even raced at all that day.

Wow. That was pretty blunt. I'm surprised people can deal with that kinda thing, even over time.

That's one reason why they're pro's. They can see something really horrible, and block it out, get back out there and do the job. Not everyone can do that and the ability is not reserved exclusively for race car drivers. First responders need that as well, anyone who will be potentially exposed to such things needs to be able to compartmentalize it and move on to deal with what's at hand.

I'm sure we've all seen stuff in person we wish we hadn't. The mind is pretty adept at blocking out shit like that, at least for a while.

Anyone ever listen to PT's story of what happened after the drivers had been taken to the medical centre? Yeesh.

That's really bleak. I guess there really was no hope :(

Is Dinner with Racers any good? First I've heard of this series and I can see they've covered a lot of ground. Obviously not everyone's as engaging as PT, though

I've seen lots of people rave about the Dinner With Racers podcast, but I'd never listened to it before. I've listened to both parts of the PT episode and it's awesome. I'll have to make it a point to listen to more.

Damn.... just tells you really how bad it was. His description actually reminded me of that cyclist, Wouter Weylandt?

A send off race for the old like that was a good idea, it was just held at the wrong track. Old config Vegas may have been okay but this config just wasn't.

Dinner with racers is just awesome, the Willy T. Ribs one is fantastic

Back on topic. As hard as it was to hear about Dan on that one, I was also a bit shocked to hear about PT's ex wife. Makes you think not everyone is cut out to be actively a part of that world.

Nobody knew how bad the race would be until they started. There was no group running in practice.

Is this the story about what was on the floor? I've heard that from someone else, not nice.

Not quite.

Spoiler:
All the fine\walking wounded drivers were sent to the medical centre, so there were 15 drivers in various states of confusion\agitation all crammed in a room. No-one was around to examine them or process them.

Then a member of the medical staff walks in and chivvies the drivers out as they're about to bring Dan in. So the drivers gather their stuff and leave the room. In the rush, PT forgot his helmet, so he turned around and went back in to grab it.

As he's picking his gear up, the other doors swing open and the stretcher with Dan on it is rolled in. PT gets a look at his head and in his own words, it is "smashed flat like a pancake". He then leaves and decides to go straight home.

ECR are expected to announce a tie-up with Scuderia Corsa that will have Ed Jones filling the non-oval role in the #20 and Jordan King looking elsewhere.

That was Paul's last race. What a terrible way to end a fine career.

It was the last 'race' for quite a few drivers.

From a very quick look on ChampCarStats, it was also the last race for at least Davey Hamilton, Tomas Scheckter, Buddy Rice, Alex Lloyd and Vitor Meira, as well as PT.

Even the ChampCarStats page on the race is depressing to look at.

I just noticed Simona started 30th and finished 17th. Very impressive considering how crazy they were running.

Yeah that's similar, I got told it was obvious he wouldn't survive because
Spoiler:
there was a lot of blood and other "stuff" all over the floor

Pretty much like Gordon Smiley's crash, as it was described by Steve Olvey in his book:

Spoiler:
"While rushing to the car, I noticed small splotches of a peculiar gray substance marking a trail on the asphalt leading up to the driver. When I reached the car, I was shocked to see that Smiley's helmet was gone, along with the top of his skull. He had essentially been scalped by the debris fence. The material on the race track was most of his brain."
