Good lord stop. It's far more dangerous for these things to get airborne into the catch fence than it is for them to hit the SAFER barrier. Everyone bitched and whined about the DW12 when it was first introduced. It's drives terrible, it has no feel, it's slow, etc. The teams dialed that out and if Indycar winds up mandating the use of the dome skid the teams will dial the ill handling out of them again. This is all a fools errand. The old cars flights were more down to the idiotic high down force high drag rules that lead to wheel to wheel contact. To counteract that, they put on these wheel covers and bumpers and made the floor of the car the size of Texas. The solution to the DW12's problems lie in the getting rid of the "safety" features they built into the car due to the previous cars problems. Ditch the covers, greatly reduce the size of the floor. If they did that, and took off some top side down force, I will guarantee that Indycar's problems with the cars disappear. |

Fans complained for years that the series had turned into a spec formula & while what we have now isn't perfect (They should just open up to multiple chassis suppliers again), It is nice to see some variables between the different kits with each developing & evolving. |

Andretti was fastest today in testing with a 223.427 MPH average lap. looks like Chevrolet also tested another new winglet in between the raised sidepod & engine cover  Honda not wanting domed skids http://www.motorsport.com/indycar/news/ ... ds-685078/ Montoya is okay with having domed skids, also says he doesn't want the underbody strakes that Honda teams are wanting http://www.motorsport.com/indycar/news/ ... ya-685265/ the way I look at it, they need to do something to make it safer but thoroughly test it out (like they somewhat did today) instead of just putting it on the cars during the race weekend. They can't cut a chunk of downforce off topside because the entire car is shaped like an inverted wing, I don't know the numbers but I wouldn't mind betting the tub produces more downforce than two wings combined (in super speedway trim anyway). But alas I still think they're trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist, they've looked at those crashes last year from a maths point of view, rather than actually looking at what happened. |

I think the cars problems with getting airborne are due to factors that the dome skids will not necessarily help to prevent. |

Exactly. I commented on an article on Racer about it and equated it to putting a Band-Aid over a gaping wound. It's just an excuse for IndyCar to say "look, we're doing something!" even if it won't fix the fundamental problems of having a gigantic floor and rear bumper pods that act like a kite when the car gets off the ground a tiny bit after impacting the wall. |

Yes, thus raising the ride height (to allow for clearance), which in turn increases the amount of said air going under the car. |

Oh well, F1 was likewise out of control when it came to ugly sidepods and winglets about 10 years ago, they saw sense eventually, lets hope Indycar do soon too. |
