February in China? Well Beijing is too cold so it would have to be somewhere near zhuhai. Wait...China?

Not Japan or Australia?

Surfers won't move that early in the year, Clipsal is already busy preparing for it's own V8 Supercar race, no other Aussie tracks are really suitable

Though I'd LOVE To see Indycars around Philip Island

55s lap times aren't too short for IndyCar, historically speaking. Long Beach and Portland are roughly 55s. But yeah surfers isn't going to happen. They could come up with yet another new street circuit in some aussie city though, it doesn't need to be an existing one.

and Brands Hatch's IndyCar layout was around the 1 minute mark for the Champ Car race in 2003 I think

Would have been less than that, we were doing 48's in 1998 in a clapped out 14 year old Reynard FFord.

Surfers really doesn't exist anymore. The new shortened track would have about a 55 second lap time. Adelaide I feel is too short for Indycars too (the old layout doesn't really exist either).

What happened, did they just change the track layouts or did the city infrastructure itself change beyond any recovery?

I don't know why but this cracked me up. Imagining some old folk with a moustache going at it like crazy in a beaten up single-seater trying to break the track record. Isn't it all what motorsport is about?

With Surfers, there is now a light rail/tram line but it doesn't cross the track, it runs down the middle of it. I'm not from there, so I'm not 100% sure, I was around a few years ago when it was being built (FYI its for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games).

Someone from QLD might know more.

I'm sure I've seen a picture showing the rails. Might have been posted here actually if someones willing to dig. IIRC it's to one side but can't avoid it otherwise the track would be as narrow as parts of Macau is.

What's the problem then? Works fine in Macau.

Hope the link works, shows that it's more then just the tracks. There's also a statio built there for the trams.

And looking at it, might be even narrower than Macau O.o

Could be good for Formula E, they're looking for a good gimmick once the car swap is over

Driver must park car and get tram to the other side of the track where another car is waiting.

Just more NIMBY whining. They make it sound like they only have a couple months of "nice" weather to enjoy the park, when in reality they have April to October of reliably non-cold weather to go there.

It's probably why we haven't had a race at Portland in ten years and Vancouver for thirteen years. I take the skytrain through the Vancouver track every day and that area still looks like it'd be amazing for an Indy Car race. They wouldn't be able to return to the 1998-2004 layouts because the area has changed too much but a return to the 1990-1997 layout with an extension at the 1st hairpin and slight modification at the tunnel exit is still completely doable. Looks fast and flowing. :)

Portland most likely would of stayed on the schedule alot longer if they didn't cancel the 2008 race there with the Champ Car merger. They had just upgraded & reconfigured the track for that race as well, just to get canceled by the series

hopefully they can get a date worked out with the series for next year as rumored.

It is a disgrace that we don't have a race in the Pacific Northwest
