I was watching this last night and I just realized that Parker Johnstone nearly got killed in this race. He said his suspension penetrated his helmet and there was a nasty bruise on his head. His crash is at 36:00 and his interview is at 1:19:00. Ribeiro also could've won this race like he did in 1996 if not for shitty Reynard transmissions. His wasn't the only one to fail.

How good was Ribeiro, anyways? He was exceptional in the races he won, but in the races he didn't win he was usually shit. And when Penske picked him up he fell into obscurity like a rock.

I remember him racing in British F3 in the early 90s for Paul Stewart Racing (you never got one of those seats unless you were good) and then Fortec. Ribeiro was a regular top 6 contender but that was it.

I think this was the crash that caused Parker to call time on his career at seasons end.

He was pretty arrogant, especially in his rookie season. I'm not sure why Penske hired him. He was like a mix between Maldonado and Ralf Schumacher but more Maldonado than Ralf. And then in 1999 Penske hired Tarso Marques who crashed out of 3/6 races.

Since we're on the subject of Andre Ribeiro, how about the idiocy he showed off at Road America in '96?

Exactly.

I agree Robbie Gordon's take on the first incident, it takes two to tango but it was a 60/40 incident in favor of Ribeiro. Moore should have been more circumspect.

The second incident is just unfortunate but you need to look at Blundell if you're going to apportion majority of the blame. He looses speed on corner exit then wanders toward the middle of the circuit as Ribeiro is going back around him, Gugelmin is the innocent victim.

I may have posted this before, but since it's Mario Andretti's birthday no more than once a year, I might as well post it again:

A few years ago I noticed that his name came up in hip hop circles a surprising amount of times. But, it might not be that surprising, after all. Wrote an article about it. In Swedish, Google translate works.

For better or worse, he's sort of the default icon of "speed", at least in the US. He gets name-checked in country songs and even a few pop songs as well (eg see this early 90s pop nugget from Amy Grant @ 1:25)

Cool Nova documentary about the 1993 CART season. Never seen it before and there is a lot of cool footage.

I forgot that ever happened! What a shame that they weren't able to use the GP circuit.

I was there. I have video camera footage of the race somewhere. The season for using the Indy circuit was due to the fact that the race was announced so late that Brands had already used up its GP circuit day allocation for the year.

As races go it was fairly dull but that was irrelevant as it was so cool to see Indycar racing at Brands.

Not sure if posted here yet but the first ever race in Australia was a classic. It was also John Andretti's first and only win in CART, and also his first race for Jim Hall.

This ended up being one amazing race between Bräck and de Ferran. :)

I wish oval racing was like this today.

I was there, on the grass infront of the Rockingham building. Man that was LOUD!

I was cheering so hard when Gil won.

Four cars finished this race at Riverside... Al Unser Jr.'s first race. :D
