Anyway, this home coming of JPM to American Open Wheel Racing was never going to be like the old days. The old 99/00 CART cars had around 900+hp with around 400lb-ft of torque , and significantly less downforce. They were turbo charged monsters. Now days, before boost, they push out 700hp, at 300lb/ft of torque. The throttle control no longer needs to be as precise as you can mash the throttle and the car will stick. Back in the 90s, the touchy throttle and lack of grip worked great for somebody like JPM.

He has a lot of adapting to do.

Fixed the horsepower figures for you. Don't know about torque, but you really underestimated things thar. Especially considering road courses.

I made a rookie error and took the IndyCar engine specs from 1999.

I don't know how you measure things in your head, but it seems to apply to different drivers differently.

Anyway, this home coming of JPM to American Open Wheel Racing was never going to be like the old days. The old 99/00 CART cars had around 700hp with around 400lb-ft of torque , and significantly less downforce. They were turbo charged monsters. Now days, before boost, they push out 550hp, at 300lb/ft of torque. The throttle control no longer needs to be as precise as you can mash the throttle and the car will stick. Back in the 90s, the touchy throttle and lack of grip worked great for somebody like JPM.

He has a lot of adapting to do.

I don't even look at points. I was only sticking to overall pace in most tracks ;)

I guess the underlined part might reveal to be 100% correct in the future.

Just for the sake of being pedantic, I'm not sure if today's Indycars have more downforce than the Champcars of 99.

The Lola from 1999 had 85% of the downforce of the 2008 Panoz. But I don't know how the current car compares with those.

You were only sticking to overall pace in most tracks?

So then you'll have noticed that Monty has qualified well at most tracks so far, including having 2nd or 3rd fastest 4-lap average at Indy. In addition, you'll have noticed that during most of the races he's been in contention for good top 6'ish positions but for engine problems or minor errors of his own doing.

I agree with ellis that Montoya has a lot of adapting to do, and Montoya himself knows that. But to criticise him and write him off based on little fact and assumption is naive and completely ignorant.

He has always been off the pace of his team mates and even other drivers from worse teams, but in last weekend it was by too much and the only thing I said was that it was sad to see a former dominator being this slow, even if a lot of adapting is still needed.

When I said that?

I am right, JPM has been off the pace all season long and the stats above just shows that

Yeah, I got it. You saw that you were wrong, so digress the debate

Not only the numbers posted showed that but most of the time JPM is shown in the broadcasts, he's either with a huge train behind him and/or getting overtaken by people. It's rare to see him in a position to overtake anybody

But then, it's my fault. I should have known what would be the outcome given JPM has quite some passionate fans

edit: I guess we better agree to disagree

I am wrong? That's cute. You are using stats only to make a point by taking things out of context. You are the only person pushing this agenda. Myself, ellis and a number of other people have pointed out the error in your assessment of Montoya's performance, but each time you've chosen to ignore those points to continue pushing your negative, laughable and ignorant agenda.

Yes, you are wrong.

Montoya, who hasn't driven an IndyCar/CART in 13 years, is slower than his team mates, who've been driving them since 1998 and 2005. Imagine that.

But you don't need to imagine it! The numbers prove that he is just slower. Nothing else matters. There is no explanation, he just is.
