Pruett spreading some gospel on the 500 car count.

https://racer.com/2022/11/01/pruett-bum ... -indy-500/

The state of play;
-27 full-time cars
-2 500-only entries have been confirmed with drivers (Marco & TK) [29]
-Dreyer & Reinbold will be back with 2 [31]
-Special Ed will likely field himself in a 3rd car [32]
-RLLR have committed to a 4th car [33]
-Foyt has the equipment to put out a 3rd car, and there will likely be a queue of bidders wanting in [34]
-JJ is a possible returnee in a 5th car for Floyd [35]
-DCR wants to run a third car for Sato [36]

The biggest impediment is engine leases - Chevy are committed to 16 and Honda 17 as it stands, so any extras for bumping would need the cooperation of their engine supplier.

Coyne openly discusses his desire to run a part-time third car for Taku.

-----------------

One nugget from the Mailbag is that Cusick Motorsports will be announcing their 500 plans next week at Thermal - presumably this will again be a tie-up with an existing team.

Cusick will partner with Dreyer & Reinbold, with Stefan Wilson in the #24.

https://racer.com/2022/11/17/cusick-drr ... -indy-500/

Also confirmed is the fact that Sage Karam will not be returning to the team. Pruett also hints that at least one NASCAR driver is on the longlist for the second DRR car.

----------------------------

Jenna Fryer reports that Ganassi are ditching #48 for #11, and that the car will be split between a veteran on the ovals and a younger driver for everything with right turns.

And a full-size update to go with it as Silly Season winds down;

https://racer.com/2022/11/18/pruett-ind ... r-edition/

tl;dr
-Latifi is now off Floyd's list as conversations petered out, which leads to the share plan outlined by Fryer yesterday. RHR is already under contract to Ganassi for IMSA, and so would be a natural fit for the ovals, but he also has interest from elsewhere. But there are also alternatives that the team can consider as the seat is in high demand, especially for the 500.
-The problem is on the other side of the share - there are several F2 drivers sniffing around not just this seat but the other 2 available (Juncos, Coyne), and they all have the same issue; a lack of money. The bidding starts at $6 million (and the Ganassi seat will be closer to 10), and no driver seems to have more than a third of that.
-Pietro Fittipaldi is trying to make something happen but he has the same deficency in funds, and it may be that the #11 ends up being split between 3 or 4 drivers.
-Marcus Armstrong seems to be ahead of all the other candidates at DCR, but even that isn't particularly close to being a deal yet. Sato on the ovals is also waiting for approval.
-At the front of Juncos' queue is Agustin Canapino, whose demo runs in Argentina generated a lot of publicity and have brought forward the real prospect of a race there in 2024.
-RLLR may swap Lundgaard and Harvey to ensure that HyVee get at least some coverage in the top 10.
-The hint given yesterday about NASCAR driver(s) being on DRR's longlist refers to both Larson and Busch, who have had conversations with the team.
-Newgarden and McLaughlin are putting together an LMP2 programme for Daytona and then Le Mans.

mmmm, slightly concerning that costs are that high for a seat

Pruett believes that Sato is at the top of the list for the oval side of that deal - he is bringing money.

The new engine will not be introduced in 2024, if it all. The hybrid unit will be.

In Pruett's accompanying opinion piece, the insinuation is that MAHLE shat the bed when it came to the ERS, Honda and Chevy picked up the baton together, and told Indycar they could have either the new engine or the ERS, but not both. Both manufacturers had already committed to a maximum of 12 leases each due to the extra cost, in the belief that a third manufacturer would sign on.

Carvana shares down 40% today, and 98% in total with them facing possible bankruptcy. I guess Jimmy J won't be relying on them for sponsorship

If it's not broken, why fix it?

Sponsors seem to be getting tremendous RoI out of it;
