Speaking of nooiiiiiice things, Katie Hargitt of indycar.com finally came back to wearing dresses that show her cute little shoulders. I'm a happy man again.

For as nice as the 2018 aero kit does look, It's a shame that were going back to a spec design where everything is going to look the same.

For the faults of the manufacturer aero kits (Cost's & higher aero with all the flaps etc...), It was at least nice to see a bit of variety in the look of the cars & to see performance differences between the designs that created the possibility for different designs to work better on different circuits/type of circuit that could create a more interesting fight over the season.

So if I get that pic right, for road courses the rear wheels will be exposed. What was the correct term of that aero/safety piece?

Or are those grey outlines supposed to present current car's dimensions?

I think the rear wheelguards will be removed on road courses. And I think that gray outline is the speedway oval configuration.

I thought gray was this year's config? A bit disappointed but it's good enough that they drop them on road courses.

Ah, I think you're right. So I guess this is the RC configuration, and the oval configuration is either remaining unchanged or has not yet been revealed?

It is confusing. The grey outlines do not completely match current oval configuration.

I simply can't believe they'd drop those wheelguards for ovals (this is the corrent term? :P) since they were a safety feature.

Maybe they drop them all together because it has not been needed that much and it creates a lot of additional debris everytime someone goes to the wall on ovals and therefore being a bigger safety hazard instead.

With or without oval wheel guards, it's a great looking machine! 8)

Yeah, and several times on road courses the rear wheel guards would get nicked by someone, and remain a loose debris on the car that can fly off into somebody else. I agree it's unlikely they'd remove them though, especially for ovals

They really need to stay on the oval cars. They absolutely cannot go back to that previous level of risk.

Yeaa, they're good for protecting against the casual wheel to wheel contact on ovals. Better a caution for debris then a car in the fence.

They just need a guard behind the front wheels though.

The guards were a knee jerk reaction to Vegas, but it can't be argued against that they actually improved the racing on the ovals thanks to the unique way they worked, this is unfortunately the normal course of 'progress', Indycar hasn't had a front to rear wheels induced aerobatics display since Vegas so whoever is making the decisions thinks 'oh we don't need them anymore, those accidents don't happen now'.

What's that saying? Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it?

Even I, a fan from a time before HANS, tethers and wheel guards, understands that the guards worked and got used to them pretty quick, pulling them off now is just asking for irony to walk up and slap you in the face, hard.

Dario Franchitti might disagree with you on that point.

The angle and the speed difference made that happen not the ineffectiveness of rear wheel guards. What Ian is pointing out is wheel to wheel contact at close speeds on an oval, something completely different.

remember however, it's still a work-in-progress. I think IndyCar said in past that they would be gone for road & streets and a smaller version would be used on the ovals.
