Just saw this:

From what I've read, it's only foam and not part of the barrier, but man.. a blow to the head at that speed and at thee right angle...who knows...

I've had a bad feeling about those new addition pieces for the SMI logo for a while now. Especially with the IndyCars

Wow what a pointless race, just enough to send a driver to hospital and then called out.

Doglegs are vicious, triovals are much smoother and forgiving if someone goes out. Those sharp corners give no chance if you're unlucky to go at the worst angle - I recall a nascar truck driver died this way? (before HANS I presume but still...).

Safe to say those foam things won't be appearing again. Just a pointless bit of decoration nearly caused serious injuries.

Eddie Gossage had a interesting theory in the IndyCar postponement press conference on what could be causing some of the recent weeper problems

Just a thought.
Would a closed cockpit/HALO helped him?

In german media they were reporting somethin like this may come 2017 to Indycar.

Helped him do what? Survive without any head/neck injuries? That is exactly what happened.

Not yet saw a Cockpit first impact with HALO or Aeroscreen (FIA Test i.E. for F1 system), that is what worries me with the plans of it in 2017

It's very hard to say if a closed cockpit/rollbar would of helped, considering the roll hoop was torn off. A rollbar/aeroscreen might help in some cases, but might hinder others.

In general, I always fear of a cockpit-first impact for all forms of racing, either it be open cockpit or closed. A rollbar/halo/rollcage or windscreen is only going to help to some extent at those speeds, depending on it's diameter & material strength of course.

Hell, NASCAR has been pretty lucky within the last 4 or 5 years on similar cases too, especially on the plate tracks. Who knows what would of happened at Daytona last year with Dillon, or if Harvick didn't miss the catchfence last month at Dega.

Blaise Alexander at Charlotte, 4th October 2001.

----------------

Not sure what a halo or a windscreen would have done to help Josef seeing as the intrusion (which was relatively minor) came entirely from 'above'. The cockpit would need to be fully closed.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Halo could have been a double edged sword, it might have protected him from the impact, but considering the roll hoop was torn off there is nothing to say the Halo wouldn't have folded in on him.

That's exactly what I've been thinking.

yup, thats why I asked the question since I was thinkin if it not could have made it worse.
To closed cockpit, Austin Dillon's huge wreck came into my mind there, what if he would not have touched the Fence with tires first... but not tryin to do a safety yes or no Discussion.

Chris posted a great qoute on Facebook yesterday.

Bourdais Is absolutely correct, you want it guaranteed safe? There's only one way to achieve that.
