Why is everyone so hung up on getting P1 right now? None of it matters at the four o'clock reset, right? Just get in the top nine and your first mission is accomplished.

Apparently, points are awarded today as well.

Today is top 33 andtop 9 only. Pole is Sunday

Are there any pics of Pagenaud on track? Also, are there no streams at all?

Oh good grief, I completely forgot about the new qualy rules.

So the pole run will be tomorrow at 1, and then the rest of the day is qualifying for the rest of the field?

Other way round, I think - everyone gets at least one run first, and then the fastest nine go into the shootout.

Actually I just looked back at the first post.

Starting at 10:15 in the morning, all times will be scrubbed and positions 10-33 will run in reverse order to determine their starting spots. Then at 2 (though the broadcast window is at 1) the Fast Nine will also each have one run (in reverse order) for the pole.

So, no bumping or...is the track even open for any activity after the Fast Nine?

Dunno, there is this rumour of a 34th car for perhaps Legge but nothing seems coming of it.

I don't see how she can get an attempt in after this session, if this session sets the grid.

Nevermind.. rules changed again from when i saw them last...

Once the qualifying session ends, the top 30 cars are locked in to the field.

http://www.indycar.com/News/2014/05/5-1 ... ying-grows

This is the stupidest qualifying format ever invented. This shit is more confusing than Daytona. Christ.

Here's what we can expect tomorrow.

May 18

Group 1 (Positions 10-30):
* All May 17 times are erased and positions 10-30 will re-qualify to determine starting position.
* Order will be the reverse of Saturday’s rankings.
* All cars will make one attempt.
* Lineup will be determined based on fastest four-lap averages.
* In the event that there are only 33 cars entered, this group will determine positions 10-33.

Group 2 (Positions 31-33):
* All Saturday times are erased and positions 31-33, and any entry that has yet to make one attempt to qualify, will then qualify to determine the 11th row of the race.
* Entries can make multiple attempts.

Group 3 (Top Nine Shootout):
* The top nine cars will run in reverse order based on May 17 times.
* All cars will make one attempt.
* At the end of the session, the cars are ranked 1-9 based on their four-lap average during the session.

Going to be hard to beat Carpenter. That car is fast in the heat of the day or the cool of the evening.

im not the biggest carpenter fan but i think it would be great if he won the race and pretty damn awesome if him and conway could pull off winning the championship or whatever it would be called in that situation.

So group 2 was clearly an attempt to showcase bumping but with no one to bump, it is completely useless. They should just add it to group 1.

Not only that, but the group 3 is a bit unfair compared to the old rules. The top9 has to run again, which means additional risk for them. What if someone crashes hard and his race car is ruined for the race? Not to mention the other risks like injury or weather conditions. The Group 1 pole man would be left on 9th spot because of rain. How great is that.

The Pole Day top11 was cleared from this extra risk, now they have to take it.

The qualifying was fine, lack of bumping was not. Now we still don't have bumping and we have a great qualifying tradition ruined.

Make the other IndyCar races more about show, don't mess with Indy's traditions!

I still don't get why they bothered changing the qualifying rules to start with, There was nothing wrong with how it was.

The pole day qualifying format with the Fast 9 shootout we have had the past few years has made for an interesting pole day with some excitement over pole in the top 9 shootout.
Bump day will only ever be interesting/exciting if there are a few more than 33 cars to produce some bumping & post-merger there was some very good bump days that had some of the old tension over 33rd spot late into the day.

The new format made day 1 a bit pointless with no real excitement & its not really added anything to today other than moving what would have usually happened on pole day to the Sunday.

The only thing that needed 'improving' to the Indy qualifying format was to get a couple more than 33 cars attempting to qualify so that we actually got some bumping with all the added drama & emotion that brings.
The new format does nothing to address that problem, It actually makes it worse as any last minute entry has far less practice time since everyone has to run again on Sunday leaving no practice time to get a car upto speed.

The onslaught of speed at IMS this morning is amazing! Aleshin 232.917 leads and 15 of the 25 who have practiced have eclipsed 230mph. What amazes me is just how close the field is. Within hundreths if not thousandths between positions. Also amazing to think back to the CART days, Jaques Villenueve at 230.140 is faster than his 1995 Players car.
