Tradition!

Or the recent tradition of the 500: make pointless, tradition defying changes for no fucking reason, other than probably an TV producer thinks it'll be better for the show.

They want to see Arie Luyendyk's 237.498mph qualifying record beat by 2016.

I bet if they pulled the engine on Arie's car and massaged it a little with todays technology tweaks or just update the ecu that car would go 240-245. If the weather was right too. Don't forget he went 239 in practice unofficially. That thing is a nearly 20 year old dinosaur now, but I don't see why we couldn't learn from it, or this current generation car could go that fast. I don't remember any of those cars flying due to aero.

Verizon Nearing 10-Year, $100M Deal To Serve As IndyCar Series Title Sponsor

Quote:
Verizon is close to finalizing a 10-year, $100M deal to become the title sponsor of the IndyCar Series. Under terms of the deal, Verizon would commit to spend approximately $10M a year in rights, activation and media, sources said. It has the option to exit the deal after five years. The agreement brings an end to a two-year search to replace Izod, which was the title sponsor from '10-13. The total rights fee is valued at $5M a year. While that represents a significant increase from the roughly $2M a year Verizon was spending as an official sponsor of the IndyCar Series, it is a decrease from the $6M Izod paid. As title sponsor, Verizon’s media and activation commitment would be approximately $5M, which is flat with the $5M Izod reportedly spent.

$10m a year as title sponsor is a bargain.

It is exactly that. It's like a hobo asking for a buck. Sad, but hey, at least Indy is offering a great entertainment!

Any ideas how much would have Continental paid for the title sponsorship under Bernard?

Well the deal was suppose to be the biggest sponsor deal in IndyCar history.

A) Continental was suppose to become series sponsor with $10M+ per season for the series.
B) Free tires for the teams ( teams pay Firestone under current deals )
C) they were suppose to activate the marketing for the series ( rumour was that it was 3-4 times bigger then when IZOD came to the series )
D) rumour was that they were suppose to pay for more races on ABC, which would help get more races on calendar.

Unfortunetly to many people in IndyCar has personal business with Firestone so they got Bernard out.
