There is no way in HELL IndyCar would let someone waltz in for the 500 with any kind of different setup from Chevy and Honda and compete. Imagine if for some reason that entry won or even flat out dominated? Chevy and Honda would be livid.

I think it's funny that most of you guys are getting excited this year's indy500 because drivers who you liked years ago when you were a kid are taking part or expressing an interest in taking part, or coming over from NASCAR. That tells me the Indy500 wouldn't be half as good without them.

But wait they're all old and lacking recent experience or in the case of Busch don't have any experience. If they do well that means anyone (with some degree of talent) can hop in today's dallara and do well. If they do poorly that just states the obvious. And if they do midpack well that just means a driver who hasn't raced indy-type cars on ovals in 10+ years is more competitive than half the field. And if they crash and injure themselves it just reminds everyone that IndyCar is comparatively dangerous. Last time most people in America will have heard about INdyCar will have been when Dario's big crash made the mainstream news.

It's a no win situation.
At best it's short term gain at the risk of longer term damage.

It's not rocket science that names like Montoya, Villeneuve and Tracy are more exciting than Man, Vautier and Legge.

The "long term damage" has already been done a long time ago, thanks to the CART / IRL split. Why not enjoy the nostalgia? :D

Actually, the last 3 500s have been real good stories, and 2 of them did involved drivers "newer" to the Indycar series. (On the losing end, granted, we're talking about Hildebrand pulling off the biggest choke in Indy history, and Takuma Sato almost passing Franchitti then crashing, but still). The other had some nostalgia feels (TK winning Indy) but TK's an active driver.

Honestly, the odds are not very good for a relatively inactive nostalgic driver (eg a PT or Villeneuve) really making a difference in the race. Kurt Busch is a bigger question mark (as he is active), and Montoya even more so because he will be both active *and* used to the Indycars by then. But honestly I think the talent in the Indy series is greater than say when Montoya schooled the entire IRL field in 2000.

Why? Why more than 2008 or 2011?

Because a couple of old farts are coming back to qualify on the last row and crash into Pippa Mann a third of the way in.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

I mean seriously, Villeneuve will turn up and be slow as he's done in just about everything he's turned up in in a decade, sans the Nationwide cars. And if Paul Tracy shows up, he won't be any good, either. Busch and Montoya will be genuinely interesting but only because they'll be in fast teams.

Lol, by Antecipated Morelli wanted to say the news that everyone already knew in the brazillian press media, now most expected, it`s just a different meaning of the word Antecipacao in portuguese.

Anyway, Montoya will have a bigger challenge now, not that his talent is different, the cars are so much closer, and I`m not saying anything about the draft package.

Woah, this isn't on at all.

Pippa doesn't have a confirmed drive yet, so they might crash into Saavedra :P

Indy qualifying has been changed:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/112813

Quote:
Under the new format, qualifying will take place across three sessions over two days, culminating in a Fast Nine shootout for pole on Sunday, May 18.

Saturday will be used to determine the 33 cars that will compose the starting grid, although not the grid order itself.

All entries will be guaranteed at least one four-lap attempt to make the field, with the fastest nine entries advancing directly to the shootout.

For the remaining cars, Saturday's times are erased for the Sunday session, and each entry will make one four-lap run to determine the starting positions between grid spots 10 and 33.

The order for qualifying attempts will run from slowest to fastest from Saturday's times.

Entries that qualify for the shootout will also make a four-lap run, with the order again based on slowest to fastest from the previous day. The top nine grid positions will be determined by aggregate times over the four laps.

The timed sessions on both days will be preceded by a practice session.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the qualifying format as it was to be honest. Saturday was all about pole & we have had some pretty exciting bump days since 2008 (Last year been the exception).

This just seems like change just for the sake of change rather than something been changed because it really needed changing. I don't even think the changes are going to end up been more interesting or exciting for fans either.

Bad change, the old format was perfectly fine.
