I have a feeling that they watched a certain racing movie to think of that myth...

I'd prefer to test that age-old commentators cliche of "these cars produce so much downforce that they could run upside down and they'd still be sucked to the ground..."

Though Logistically I can't think of a way they COULD test it unless it was in a windtunnel or something

They wanted to test that idea, but yep, they couldn't find a way to do it.

that's easy though.

if the car produces more downforce than it weighs it's good to go.

Yeah that's the theory. And obviously it'll work, but nobody has ever done it. That's why it's still just a theory, a d why it's perfect for the show. But short of building an upside down track with a giant progressive curve, it can't be tested.

What about a giant loop de loop? Would that be enough to prove the theory or would people decry it because the inertia already built up could carry it through the upside down part without actually proving if it was sticking all on its own?

Where's Sheldon Cooper when you need him lol

Someone at trackforum suggested to tape an indycar under the wind of an aircraft and loosen the tape while flying. If it sticks it can go on upside down.

Well that's just plain fucking stupid and shows a monumental amount of misunderstanding of the basic laws of physics. The car would slow down due to the massive amount of drag, whilst the aircraft would continue to be propelled forward. So the car would disconnect from the plane and fall to the ground through drag slowing it down.

Looks like I'll be heading to Pocono next year... Assuming it's a 500 mile race.

Quote:
New Zealand motor-racing ace Scott Dixon may soon be starring in a reality television show with his wife and other motor-racing glamour couples.

Dixon, who is on holiday in New Zealand with his family, yesterday revealed details of a pilot show called IndyCar Couples being considered for production.

The 31-year-old and his Welsh-born wife, Emma Davies-Dixon, a former British and Welsh 800m running champion, have been approached to star in the show alongside three other IndyCar couples.

2012 IndyCar Championship winner American Ryan Hunter-Reay and his wife, Beccy, a former US women's softballer and off-road racing enthusiast, plus Canadian driver Alex Tagliani and wife Bronte are also in the mix.

Spanish driver Oriol Servia and girlfriend Jackie Becker are the fourth couple.

Dixon said only a few details about the show had been revealed.

"I know there's a pilot [which has] been floating round at the moment ... named IndyCar Couples.

"I don't know the details of it yet, but I think, if it goes well, starting to shoot in the spring of America."

Dixon, originally from Pukekohe, scooped his latest victory at the Belle Isle Grand Prix in Detroit in June.

The US-based couple's daughters, Poppy, 3, and Tilly, 1, might also make a few guest appearances on the show, Dixon said.

"The kids may be on there a little bit - it's hard not to [because] they're so loud."

Dixon, a CanTeen ambassador, was at St Kentigern College in Pakuranga yesterday to collect a cheque for $7435.50 raised by the students for the child cancer organisation.

Up-and-coming motor-racing driver Mitch Evans, a former St Kent's student, was also on hand for the presentation.

The 18-year-old, who only two weeks ago was crowned the GP3 champion in Italy, left the college two years ago at the end of Year 11 to pursue a career in motorsport.

Evans said returning to his old stamping ground in the company of Dixon was a surreal experience.

"I've looked up to Scott my whole life because he's at the pinnacle of his game and the sport."
