The 2022-23 Formula E World Championship will be the 9th season of the series, and the third world championship.

By far the most significant change between this season and last is the introduction of the Gen3 rules package. The new chassis is narrower, shorter and lighter, as are the batteries. The cars will be faster, with max power being bumped to 350kw in qualifying and 300kw in the races, from 250kw and 200kw respectively.

More power will mean more energy is needed to complete a race, and this will come through a new MGU on the front axle for harvesting and the (eventual) re-introduction of pitstops, this time for charging. Other changes include a new tyre supplier in Hankook, the removal of Fanboost and a reversion to lap count races from the timed affairs that previously took place.

Calendar (last edited 7th December)

Quote:
Mexico City - 14th January
Diriyah I - 27th January
Diriyah II - 28th January
Hyderabad - 11th February
Cape Town - 25th February
Sao Paulo - 25th March
Berlin I - 22nd April
Berlin II - 23rd April
Monaco - 6th May
Jakarta - 3rd June
Jakarta - 4th June
Portland - 24th June
Rome I - 15th July
Rome II - 16th July
London I - 29th July
London II - 30th July

Once again, all of the races will take place during one calendar year.

There is some juggling of the calendar, as some tracks come to terms with the requirements of the new car. Mexico City moves to the middle of January and becomes the season opener. New races at Hyderabad, Cape Town and Sao Paulo have been added and Jakarta expands to a double-header. Rome's double-header is pushed back into July, and the ExCeL weekend in London will end the season as Seoul was going to move to a date in May before the track became unavailable. The June TBA that was originally Vancouver's date has moved a short way down the coast to Portland, to replace the event in New York.

Entrants

Quote:
Neom McLaren ¦ Rene Rast - Jake Hughes
Maserati ¦ Edoardo Mortara - Maximilian Guenther
Jaguar TCS ¦ Mitch Evans - Sam Bird
Envision ¦ Nick Cassidy - Sebastien Buemi
Avalanche Andretti ¦ Jake Dennis - Andre Lotterer
TAG Heuer Porsche ¦ Pascal Wehrlein - Antonio Felix Da Costa
Mahindra ¦ Oliver Rowland - Lucas di Grassi
Nissan ¦ Norman Nato - Sasha Fenestraz
NIO 333 ¦ Dan Ticktum - Sergio Sette Camara
DS Penske ¦ Stoffel Vandoorne - Jean-Eric Vergne
ABT Cupra ¦ Robin Frijns - Nico Muller

The new car also sees somewhat of a shakeup in the entry list, with ABT's promised return orginally bringing the total number of cars back up to 24, and a host of ownership changes\mergers\de-mergers as well. Chief amongst these is the sale of the Mercedes team and entry to McLaren, as well as DS and Techeetah separating with DS forming a new parternship with Penske (the Dragon moniker has been dropped entirely). Techeetah's future is somewhat in doubt, and they will skip this season with the view of coming back for 2023-24. Maserati also enter the series as a constructor, having struck a deal with Venturi (which has subsequently led to the departure of both Wolff and d'Ambrosio), and Nissan have taken full ownership of their eponymous team from e.dams.

In terms of drivers, the standout move is perhaps Buemi's departure from Nissan after having driven with them from the beginning of the series. He will replace Frijns at Envision with Cassidy staying put. Frijns moves to ABT, and will have the returning Nico Muller as his team-mate. In response to Buemi, Nissan are bringing back Nato to the series, and will team him up with current Super Formula driver Fenestraz.

Di Grassi is on the move again to Mahindra, replacing Alexander Sims alongside Rowland. His former team-mate Mortara remains at Maserati despite the ownership change, and he is partnered by Nissan refugee Guenther. Da Costa moves on from Techeetah and will replace Andretti-bound Lotterer at Porsche, with Wehrlein remaining as his team-mate. Lotterer replaces Oliver Askew alongside Dennis.

McLaren are bringing Rast back to the series and partner him with rookie Hughes. Sette Camara leaves Dragon to slot in at NIO, who retain Ticktum to complete their line-up. In turn, DS are bringing along Jean-Eric Vergne to their partnership with Penske, and his team-mate is defending champion Stoffel Vandoorne.

Jaguar is therefore the only team that retains both their drivers for the new formula.

Have they said how long the cars will have to charge for in the pits? Presumably would need to be a reasonable period of time for any meaningful charging?

Nothing has been formalised, but the general intent is for the car to be stationary for around 30 seconds maximum.

The teams have been practising it during testing;

Just give us charging pads on the track and let us go full wipeout 2097 style!

Will they still do attack mode?

Because if they don't replacing on track battle strategy with becoming another series that ruins the chance of good racing with pit strategy is gonna be pretty lame....

There will still be attack mode, but the mechanics of it have not yet been worked out - one suggestion has been to have the pitstop charging unlock it.

And of course the calendar is shuffled again. Cape Town has been formally announced, but Seoul is off as the Olympic Park is being renovated, Berlin is back up to 2 races and the 11th March gap has been voided entirely. The Seoul weekend is being held open for another city to slot in, South Korean or otherwise.

On the technical side, Fanboost has been dropped.

move the charging pads off-line, and the slower you drive over the pad the more charge you get. might create some interesting strategy decisions and conflicts on track

Maserati have confirmed Mortara and Guenther, which leaves only the second McLaren seat open.

Charging pitstops are likely to be delayed until sometime in the middle of the season after issues in testing.

It's testing so don't expect any details bar the picture, but looks like he had a brake failure or something and went up the grass bank....

The sporting regulations have (finally) been firmed up.

-The timed races are indeed gone, to be replaced by lap-count affairs (with the BTCC approach to added laps for SCs being yoinked as well).
-Attack Mode will initially take the form of 4 minutes of extra power, to be split across 2 windows in a manner of the driver's choosing (1+3,2+2,3+1).
-This will be replaced by 'Attack Charge' when charging pitstops come in - there will still be 2 windows of extra power, but they will only become available after the pitstop.
-The pitstops themselves will be mandatory and must be taken within a specified window.

ABT will carry Cupra branding, showing that the link with VAG has not been completely severed.

Seoul is no great loss. The crowd for that race was embarrassing.

For what it's worth, the test race that has just concluded saw times about 4 seconds per lap quicker than the times from the actual races here a couple of seasons ago.

Buemi had a sizeable off this morning due to what has been a recurring issue with the car - the brakes are electronic, and if the motor shuts off unexpectedly (as it has been prone to do), the brakes go with it.

There is a solution that is being developed, but it will not be in place until part way through the season. Certainly, the rounds at Mexico City and Diriyah will not see the solution deployed.
