The 7th season of Formula E will be the first World Championship season. There was supposed to be the introduction of the Gen 2 Evo bodywork, but this was scrapped to save money in the wake of bat flu, so the cars will look identical to last season's. There is also a development freeze in place for the same reason - teams can either introduce a new powertrain at the start of this season or the start of the next one, but not both.

Pre-season testing will take place in Valencia next week.

Calendar

For the first time, all races will be held in a single calendar year (I do not know why the season title contains both this year and next). There are currently 15 races scheduled;

There are two new venues joining the calendar, with the first championship races being held at Valencia's Ricardo Tormo - the venue has previously held several practice races as part of pre-season testing. There will also be a double-header at the Puebla circuit in Mexico, replacing the rounds at AHM as that circuit is being used as a temporary hospital. In addition, the London races will be held on a new circuit that should have been part of last season's calendar. The 2 races at Diriyah will be held at night.

Marrakesh, Santiago, Sanya and Seoul all had their races cancelled.

A little more movement this time - only 5 teams (Techeetah, Mercedes, Dragon, Audi and Nissan) have confirmed the same drivers that they finished the last season with. Of the rest, Sam Bird is the permanent replacement for James Calado at Jaguar, and replacing him at Envision is Nick Cassidy. Alexander Sims has moved to Mahindra as Jerome d'Ambrosio has retired, and in turn is replaced at BMW by Jake Dennis, with Mahindra also retaining Alex Lynn after he completed the previous season with them. Pascal Wehrlein returns to the series with Porsche to replace Neel Jani. Norman Nato replaces Felipe Massa at Venturi, and NIO have recruited Tom Blomqvist to replace Ma Qing Hua.

Coverage

The confirmed changes in coverage so far are that the US rights will move from FOX to CBS, and that in Brazil the races will be shown live for the first time on Globo.

If they're gradually positioning this to be a normal summer championship, I'll be disappointed.

Having racing to watch in the traditional "off" season was one of the biggest draws of Formula E for me.

Hope this is just as a result of COVID and not a long strategy to reposition the championship in the calender like a reverse WEC

Yeah, let's face it. Entering Formula E was a mere publicity stunt for these big manufacturers. Electric cars will not dominate the global market for many years to come yet (the same way the Segway belly flopped after being labelled as the vehicle of the future when it was introduced). It's still a luxury for the yuppies. Plus these manufacturers always pull out of every motorsport series sooner or later. Formula E is a glorified ladder series to begin with. It's time to hit the road and focus on these shiny petrol cars again! ;)

Honestly didn't expect it to unravel so quickly at a time when things looked on the up. A real shame

Apparently the theory is that the series is ironically being undermined by all the new electrification targets coming in, because the manufacturers will have to switch resources from developing electric racing cars to electric road cars

One additional point: not everyone can win (even in FE, designed to be as equal/random as possible) and when you have so many OEMs on the grid some of them will simply exit because they're not winning. I think this would apply to BMW, but not to Audi since they have been rather successful. So it is not always the fault of the series.

Also not sure how much corona'ed economy plays a role here.

It happens all over motorsports with manufacturers. They'll do a series for a bit, get some exposure then bugger off. Won't hurt Formula E as much as say manufacturers buggering off hurt say IMSA GTLM or DTM.

Oh. Just saw a report on TV a couple of days ago, about the beggining of the preparations for the race.

When I read the title, I thought it was about our country rapidly approaching full lockdown because of the second wave.

But yeah, it's about that strain. No one from the UK is allowed in, for the near future. I don't that's gonna change in other countries, at least in the next few weeks.

I'm surprised this series and formula 1 have planned overseas races on their calendars for 2021. Completely unrealistic and out of touch with reality. Just keep it small and simple on normal tracks, street races are just not going to happen in 2021.

The calendar has been significantly revised. Paris has been cancelled altogether, and Seoul, Berlin, New York and London have all been postponed.

However, Rome and Monaco are still planned for their original dates, with the permanent circuit in Valencia taking Paris' old date, Marrakesh returning from racetrack purgatory to take Seoul's original date, and Santiago being rescheduled for the 5th and 6th June.

Brands, Thruxton, Snetterton, Silverstone National, Enna-Pergusa, Vallelunga (no hairpin), Magione, Marrakech, Lime Rock Park. Now that would be a calendar.

Enna Pergusa is the silver bullet here, first lap pile up incoming

I guess Oulton Park also has a short layout, they could also attend races at places that usually doesn't have many high end events like Castle Combe

plus RB Ring has a good short course, just like Mugello (although the good corners are off the short course and perhaps they must put chicanes on the main straight so the batteries could last)
