The worst thing about it is there is now a month before the next race to be able to completely shed light on these decisions so speculation and frustration about the penalty inconsistency will fester until we get to snet.

Might be worth listening to something like Tin Top Tuesday tomorrow to see if more comes out from this?

TTT isn't a serious programme; they usually steer clear of controversial topics. It's still worth a listen though!

Austin had been driving aggressively throughout the day, and Neal... well I always find there is an irony when Neal complains about someone else's driving.

Neal does realize he'd bulldozed a bunch of cars out of the way up to that point himself, doesn't he? He's developing a Plat-ego.

Developing? He's had that since the nineties. He's only recently developed 3 titles to back up that ego.

I don't understand how the car in the middle being squeezed outside and inside is somehow at fault for that crash?

It's like blaming Rubens Barrichello for Ralf Schumacher coming half a track length over to squeeze him between himself and Kimi Raikkonen at Hockenheim 2003.....

Let's have a look from fancam:

To me, it seems Matt Neal's account of the accident is a lot more accurate than Rob's :o

All Austin I'm afraid, he's the one who decided three wide in a place where two wide is bordering on daft was a good idea. Did he think that Neal and Scott would just magically disappear?

There was plenty of room up the inside so I can understand why Austin thought the move was on. The initial bump was his doing, for the bravery née fool hardy overtake attempt. However everything after that first bump was Neal and Neal only. All three cars could have driven away had it not been for Matt's decision to give a little payback. Sorry but Austin isn't at fault for how they all ended in the tyre wall.

I haven't seen the official footage, but from that fan cam it seems unlikely they were ever going to get through there 3-wide, and it was Austin's decision to make it 3 wide. There was no room between Neal and Scott going through that corner so I don't see how he could have turned less into Austin.

After the initial contact Neal had two choices... turn into the corner (and into Austin) or straighten the car, wait for Austin to be clear then take the corner. Neal chose the former. Scott's position shows that the latter part of the incident was totally avoidable. At no point did Scott make any contact with Neal, until the very end when he was pushed into the tyres. Scott gave Neal extra room to avoid damage to his own car. But Neal did what he did and completely unnecessarily so.

Like I said before, Austin at fault for the initial contact but Neal at fault for putting everyone in the tyres.

100% Austin, if Matt had waited for Rob to finish passing him I'm sure he would've been turned into by Scott and the same thing would've happened but with 2 cars instead of 3.

He had to turn in at some point and Rob's car being there denied him the opportunity to make it through safely, therefore Rob's fault.

It's like criticising someone in the middle of the 3 abreast action at Daytona for causing the big one when someone is coming down on him from outside and up on him from inside....

You're contradicting yourself there. As I'd already mentioned, Scott never made contact with Neal and gave him space . That blows your theory that Scott would have turned into Neal.

Three abreast racing is possible. There was enough space as is evident in the videos. It was brave and risky, but isn't that what racing is about? What racing isn't about is petty revenge actions, that is what caused the three cars to end in the wall. Neal didn't like the bold overtake attempt and turned into Austin (after the initial bump, which is normal / accepted in BTCC right and something which Neal does all the time?) and left his foot in. Austin's car didn't spin itself or create that momentum to end in the tyre wall. Pathetic driving by Neal and that which you seem to be ignoring in my point.

It's nothing like the situation at Hockenheim '03 or like being in the centre lane for the big one at Daytona.

Initial contact was Rob's, Matt put them in the wall.

It was generally a shite weekend for Austin. Jeff Smith is clearly paying other drivers to smash into Rob this season :(
