Ollie Jackson just mentioned on Tin Top Tuesday that the front of the car is a total write off, as if it wasn't clear enough already. In addition to the visible bolt-on parts in the image above, the gearbox casing is cracked and the engine block has had a hole punched through it. Simon Belcher's car is in a similar state with engine & gearbox damage, as well as every other side of the car being damaged. He'll be releasing an onboard video next week.

If they can't build a proper barrier because of the church, then how about some armco right next to the track, ie:

SAFER would be even better, but I'm guessing they'll never be able to afford that

The closer the barrier is to the track, the more likely you are to hit it at a shallower angle. You'll just be going faster though.

I would personally build a better tyre wall and think about some gravel in front of it. I know gravel could roll a car anyway, but if it's far enough back from the corner, they should scrub off some speed by then. Belcher went flying in forwards so I think gravel may have helped. Maybe even some Tarmac? Not right next to the circuit as that would kill the challenge, but having some before the barrier would be more effective to brake on than wet grass.

Just please don't change the layout. I can see them doing something stupid like using the runways and making church a sharp corner. Or a chicane *cringes*

I doubt they'll change the circuit. They've already said they don't want to fundamentally lose the character of the circuit and won't make kneejerk changes. I have faith that they will be sensible about it - probably a better barrier of some kind. It's not an inherently dangerous corner, because they already have loads of run-off there

Simon Belcher has confirmed that the car is not as bad as they first thought, as the shell was reckoned to be damaged. It is not the the case, although the engine, gearbox and the front sub frame needs fixed. They reckon they will get the car fixed for Oulton.

If it was down to the FIA, and this was F1, the whole outside of Church would be tarmac :-p

If it were down to the FIA, Thruxton would have been closed 20 years ago.

I stand corrected on what I said previously, one person has died in an accident at Church, but in a twist of fate JJ Abrams would be proud of, the person died as a result of hitting the marshals post on the inside of the corner, rather than going anywhere near the trees...

Was that the Renault Clio crash supporting the truck series about 10 years ago?

Kevin Lloyd? That was at Noble.

Must be thinking Mark Williams in the BMW in '02.

Yeh, 2002 for Kevin Lloyd.

That was also the year Bob Smith suffered his career ending eye injury at Brands. The Clio's were just utterly stupid in their driving that year.

Really? For some reason I thought it was 02. Still, my point remains about the 2002 Clio season

Was it ever stated if Lloyd's heart attack caused the crash or was a result of it?

What crash was that? I was at Thruxton about 10 years ago when a historic saloon hit the marshals post at Church during a trucks weekend, wasn't fatal though to my knowledge. Big coincidence if thats the crash you're thinking of!

Nothing was ever really made clear from what I remember. I do remember a heart attack being mentioned, but it was never said if that was the cause or was a result of the crash.

Just to highlight what I meant about the 2002 Clio season. Here is just some of the major accidents that occurred. I want to point out that drivers were injured in a couple of these:

And that was just the tip of the iceberg. Oulton Park was just a destruction derby.
