Had the accident not occured Cleland would have won the title, even if Harvey finished ahead. So as Cleland was ahead in the points standings (using the track positions at that time) then the accident did give Harvey the title.

However what I'm referring to is the role Soper played by blocking Cleland, boxing in Cleland, ensuring Harvey got ahead of Cleland and generally getting in the way of the title fight.

Oh yes. I think a famous one was in soaking wet conditions. "Where the hell's the track?!"

That incident still gets me enough that if I bumped into Soper today I'd have a few choice words for him.

Being a Hoy fan I'm still (more) annoyed by Harvey's actions that day than Soper's. Hoy was in a position to win the title when the BMW's and Cleland caught up to him late in the race. Harvey then basically bundled Will off the track while he was defending Harvey's attack on the exit of Copse. See here from about 14:30:

Steve on the other hand was being a team player and helped Tim get to a position where he needed to be to secure the crown. My objection (I was originally making above) is that to this day Harvey believes Soper did nothing that day to influence the title outcome and objected to Matt Neal's tactics at the 2009 season finale.

Was the race shown live at the time? I never really understood how Soper managed to get from the back of the field at the end of a lap 1, with a damaged car, to catch up with the championship contenders by the end.

And watching the highlights again, it was a very optimistic move by Soper on Leslie on the first lap - he deserved to get spun out for that...

The race wasn't shown live, I think the BBC showed the highlights the following weekend. The race was a long one from memory, as they all were in those days, somewhere around 30-40 minutes. Soper only lost around 10-15 seconds after his first lap spin and given that the cars ahead were battling a lot it aided Steve's recovery.

Thanks, I like. Not bad price either.

This is the product description...

Quote:
Tim Harvey drove the #8 Vic Lee Motorsport 318is to the 1992 British Touring Car Championship. His 1992 title was achieved by winning five of the last seven races, having previously only won once. A dramatic final race saw him beat John Cleland (Vauxhall Cavalier) and reigning champion Will Hoy (Toyota Carina) to the title, after Hoy suffered an engine failure and Cleland clashed with Harvey's team-mate Steve Soper.

I don't remember Hoy's engine failiing.

Time for a thread resurrection, methinks.

Enjoy!

Away from old races, another thing that I've thought about recently is how many different champions the series has had because, frankly, the current run of six is nothing compared to what has happened in the past. Just look at the period from 1987-2003:

1987 - Chris Hodgetts
1988 - Frank Sytner
1989 - John Cleland (If James Weaver had achieved one more fastest lap in his class, he'd have been champion)
1990 - Robb Gravett
1991 - Will Hoy
1992 - Tim Harvey
1993 - Joachim Winkelhock
1994 - Gabriele Tarquini
1995 - John Cleland
1996 - Frank Biela
1997 - Alain Menu
1998 - Rickard Rydell
1999 - Laurent Aiello
2000 - Alain Menu (If Anthony Reid had scored just four more points, i.e. not been punted off at Silverstone, he'd have been champion)
2001 - Jason Plato
2002 - James Thompson
2003 - Yvan Muller

So basically if those two 'if' scenarios had actually happened (they were definitely within the realms of possibility), there would have been SEVENTEEN consecutive different champions. That is insane. Even looking at what actually happened, every year of the 1990s had a different champion and I'm incredibly impressed by that.

Thanks for the bump. Although I disagree with your point about Reid in 2000. If I remember correctly, it wasn't a Reid mistake rather that Vincent Radermacker took him out in the very last race.

Yes, sorry, you're right. But the point stands, he'd have won if that incident didn't happen.

I posted this elsewhere some time back, it is the 1997 Tourist Trophy.

I would dearly love to see the 1996 event.
