Looks like the organisers have finally realised the current cars are rubbish. They still seem a bit hesitant though.

TCR is being adopted by many countries and expanding very quickly. NGTC has flourished in a short space of time and there is a plentiful supply of old machinery. How hard do STCC need to make it?

They're saying that TCR is being considered and that following the series closely.

This is even more amazing:

Every car are the same as the ones which were on the grid in 2012, except one which was built in 2014!

West Coast Racing, one of the mainstays of the series since its inception in 1996, has merged with the Volvo factory team, Cyan (formerly Polestar). Meaning that their combined 5 cars from last season will now be 2. WCR has always been the main opponent of the Volvo team, so this is a bit strange, and very unfortunate. Safe to say, WCR will now concentrate on their TCR effort.

does that mean it will be unlikely that STCC will have at least 10 cars on the grid for 2016?

I think 10 cars is possible, but unlikely for more. There's some speculations that WCR have sold their cars, but I haven't heard anything concise. The words on a new street race for 2016 turned out to be unfounded, and there's no words on who these new teams could be.

Robert Dalhgren is now confirmed as the 2nd Volvo driver, meaning that Björk and Ekblom will likely drive their WTCC cars.

Yup. (though he hasn't raced in Sweden since 2012).

Quite a career he had. He raced at Le Mans in a Porsche 962 with Hurley Haywood and Wayne Taylor in 1990, shared cars with Colin McRae, Jim Richards, David Brabham, Johnny Herbert, raced with and against Alain Menu many many times, and won quite a lot of big races! He had an offer to go to F1 with Jordan in 1993, but there were no money. One of the greatest Swedish athletes ever.

Yay, a good news!

http://www.touringcartimes.com/2016/04/ ... -wirdheim/

That should bump up the number of cars to over 10

Johan Kristoffersson, Emma Kimiläinen and Daniel Haglöf set for the new PWR Seat team.

Even that Thed Björk, Fredrik Ekblom and Fredrik Larsson is no longer a part of the series, 2016 is set to be the best season in quite a while for STCC! Flash Engineering re-enters the series, Björn Wirdheim makes his debut, Linus Ohlsson makes a part-time comeback, Robert Dahlgren returns. May only be 11 cars full-time confirmed so far, but I don't see any particulary weak drivers or teams!

Robert Dahlgren – Polestar Cyan Racing – Volvo S60
Richard Göransson – Polestar Cyan Racing – Volvo S60
Carl Philip Bernadotte – Polestar Cyan Racing – Volvo S60
Mattias Andersson – Dacia Dealer Team – Dacia
Kevin Aabol – Brovallen Design – TBA
Rasmus Mårthen – Brovallen Design – TBA
Johan Kristoffersson – PWR Racing Team – Seat
Emma Kimiläinen – PWR Racing Team – Seat
Daniel Haglöf – PWR Racing Team – Seat
Björn Wirdheim (R) - Flash Engineering - Saab (?)
Reuben Kressner (R) - Flash Engineering - Saab (?)
Linus Ohlsson - Flash Engineering - Saab (?) (part-time, filling in for Wirdheim when he is abroad, may turn in to a full-time ride)

Unconfirmed:
Henric Skoog (R) - Team Tidö - Saab (?)
Andreas Samuelsson - ??? - ???

That SEAT looks really nice, shame it's not a real model.

Yes, that Seat has entered STCC this ambitiously (a 3-year program) puts the pressure on STCC to switch regs to TCR as soon as possible. The Seat team even said in an early press release that they would purchase a TCR Leon for "evaluation purposes". And whenever STCC is asked about TCR, they say that they are looking at it very seriously. Hell, STCC may have a future after all!

And now Ford is joining in, "in preparation for TCR"! http://www.touringcartimes.com/2016/04/ ... n-for-tcr/
This leaves Kia out in the cold, which is a bit of a bummer, but I guess STCC now has to see TCR as a must for 2017. Only Rasmus Mårthen confirmed now, but I hope Aabol also will be soon, so there's a Norwegian driver in the series too.

A very typical STCC off season. No news at all for months, then with 2 weeks until the season starts, all happens.

KIA has a TCR car out testing right now, iirc.

Gonna be kinda funny that they're going to much slower cars as "the future."

Awesoooome! I just wonder why, but this is fantastic for STCC, even if only for one race.

Another factor is that there have been rumours that McLaughlin will be leaving Garry Rogers and going to DJR Team Penske, so perhaps they're trying to provide incentives to keep McLaughlin in a Volvo.

by making him fly literally across the world for a minor race at a shite track in a shite car? Well, it is very appreciated up here, and if there's a back-story or a twist to the story, I think I'm better off not knowing about it!

I'd presume they're at least paying him good money to do it. I wouldn't know, I'm only repeating what's been suggested on other forums.
