V8SC 2008 - Round 10 - SuperCheap Auto Bathurst 1000

RACE START IN
You need JavaScript to be activated to be able to use the timer function

After a rain influenced Phillip Island 500, the V8 Supercars head to the greatest track in Australia, Mount Panorama, for the biggest race of the V8 Supercar Season.

The top four from the Island are the clear favourites for success at the mountain. Whincup and Lowndes would be the outright favourites as the pair targets a 3rd successive Bathurst title. Not since 1984 has this been done, when Larry Perkins and Peter Brock celebrated a 3rd successive Bathurst win.

Tander and Skaife aren't too far behind. The winners of Phillip Island are certainly going to be front runners, and if Skaife manages to show pace (unlike PI) the pairing will be even stronger.

Will Davison and Steven Johnson showed great strength at Bathurst last year finishing 3rd, and this year the team has been even stronger. A round win, and a couple of race wins, certainly show that the team have the form to finish on top, and it certainly would be my most desirable outcome.

Winterbottom and Steven Richards are the final of the top pairings, and should be on a near equal favourite status with the #888 and #1 cars. They were leading Bathurst late last year when the rain came, causing Winterbottom to have a big off at the Chase and would be looking to make up for that error this year.

The other lead driver pairings are Jason Richards and Murphy, Holdsworth and Caruso, Ingall and Morris, Todd Kelly and Price, and Andrew Jones and McConville. All of whom are more than capable of a strong showing.

Rick Kelly (and Radisich), Courtney (and Besnard), Van Gisbergen (and Webb), Bright (and Macrow) are the most likely of the regular/non-regular pairings that are within a chance of a win.

The best non-regular pairing is Steve Owen and Warren Luff in the #17 DJR Falcon. Unless a driver change or car swap occurs before the race, this will be the first race at Bathurst since goodness knows when that there wasn't a Johnson in the #17 Falcon.

Can't wait 8) Didn't get to see it last year as Motors decided to show ALMS instead, but come the race start this year I'm going to be slumped on the sofa armed with large amounts of Red Bull :p

Going down on the Wednesday morning and back the Saturday night (Prefer to watch the big one on tv rather than wondering around for 6 hours doing nothing over there).

Should be awesome.

I'm going home specifically to see this one, Live Utes whoo. Utes at Bathurst for the first time EVER on Motors TV (even when Motors was big on the Brutes the Bathurst races never made it over because they were stand alone events and they didn't show last years rounds because they were live on Ten and Motors were showing ALMS so they didn't bother to make a highlights show.... )

So yeah, going to be one awesome weekend. With the late night F1 on the same night it's time for another classic motorsport all-nighter, my first since Le-mans....well I fell asleep for about 45 mins but that doesn't count!

I've worked the past two Bathurst Sunday's so I'm missing the live coverage. I've written on the roster at work that if I have to work I'm not available before 5pm. Fingers crossed that the boss actually pays attention to it.

3 out of 4 casual staff work Sunday. Depends if others got in first, whether the boss actually reads where I've written my availability.

I didn't specifically write not available, I wrote if I have to work can I not start until 5pm. Mainly because I've got multiple dates coming up that I'm not available, so I didn't specifically want to rule myself unavailable.

Had written down a week and a half ago I wasn't available this coming Saturday, but the boss hadn't seen it so I was rostered on, but have changed shifts with a co-worker.

I've got an upcoming friend's wedding, where if the boss rosters me on I won't be showing up for work even if I can't negotiate a shift change.

Interesting to see they have persisted with the 10:30am start again this year, and the race is finished no later than 5:25pm....... less than 7hrs racing allowed??

Hopefully there aren't too many safety cars or a wet day (2000 obviously, but also 2001 and 2002 came quite close to the 7hr mark), or for the first time in history the race will be finished early* for reasons other than a red flag (1981 & 1992)

*Of course one can argue the 1987 race only lasted 158 laps, or that the 1968 Hardie-Ferodo 500 & 1976 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 lasted one lap longer than it should have ;)

An interesting article about the safety car in the V8 Bathurst magazine (Motor Racing Australia published by Chevron).
I'm not going to post the whole article, but some interesting stats from it.

In the 23 Great Races since 1987 (when the SC was first used), the safety car has has been deployed 118 times.

Least number of appearances was zero in 1989 and 1991.
Largest number was 13 in 2000.

The 118 safety cars have affected 486 laps of racing.
0 laps affected in 89 and 91, 44 affected in 2006 and 43 in 2000.
Longest deployment was 12 laps for Paul Radisich's shunt at the Chase in 2006.

CAUSES
12 due to mechanical failure
1 due to Denny Hulme's heart attack.
105 due to accident, or car getting stuck.

SAFETY CARS BY LOCATION
The Chase - 18 (15.3%) - 1 mechanical/personal
Griffin's Bend - 14 (11.9%) - 2
The Cutting - 14 (11.9%) 3
Forrest's Elbow - 12.5 (10.6%) - 2
Sulman Park - 11.5 (9.7%) - 0
Murray's Corner - 10 (8.5%) - 0
The Esses - 9 (7.6%) - 0
Reid Park - 8 (6.8%) - 2
Conrod Straight - 6 (5.1%) - 2
Hell Corner - 5 (4.2%) - 0
McPhillamy Park - 4 (3.4%) - 0[/code]
The Dipper - 2 (1.7%) - 0
Skyline - 2 (1.7%) - 1
Pit entry - 1 (0.8%) - 0
Mountain Straight - 1 - 0.8% - 0
* Simultaneuous incidents occurred in 2001 at Sulman Park and Forrest's Elbow hence the half.
** If a car hit the wall at Sulman Park and ended in the sand at McPhillamy, Sulman gets the credit.

SAFETY CAR TIMING
1-10: 4 (3.4%)
11-20: 6 (5.1%)
21-30: 7 (5.9%)
31-40: 10 (8.5%)
41-50: 11 (9.3%)
51-60: 11 (9.3%)
61-70: 12 (10.2%)
71-80: 9 (7.6%)
81-90: 5 (4.2%)
91-100: 10 (8.5%)
101-110: 6 (5.1%)
111-120: 6 (5.1%)
121-130: 2 (1.7%)
131-140: 10 (8.5%)
141-150: 8 (6.8%)
151-161: 1 (0.8%)

From 1987-1996, the average field size was 45.5 cars, 25 safety cars affected 132 laps of racing.
In the last 10 races (1998-2007), average field size 39.8 cars, 81 safety cars affected 300 laps of racing.

I sure as hell won't be available. I had no choice last year during the F1, so I took a 34cm TV I had lying around to work. Don't work weekends anymore so problem sorted.

Always a great race this (above and beyond the "Great Race" nickname). Hopefully there's some variable weather in there as that always spices things up a bit. Van Gisbergen was amazing in the wet at PI the other weekend, and I'd expect to see something pretty special around the mountain if the conditions are anything like what they were there.

Clashing with anything this year? Ch 10 were infuriating with their coverage of the Japanese GP whenever Bathurst took precedence, they'd have you believe the fantastic 2005 race went for about 50 minutes, I'm guessing this won't be an issue with Ch 7 running the show.

The only issue with 7 will be if they delay the race as they run it, like they did with Phillip Island.

I think PI started live, but finished 20 minutes late even with chopping out a few laps late.

Bathurst last year was a couple of minutes behind at the end, which I think is still unacceptable.

It wasn't hard in the days of 10 to go to an adbreak and if anything happened during they'd show it when we got back, I don't know why it is such a problem when an event is going to go for 7 hours. Don't rely on a Safety Car to be able to cut out the SC laps to keep on track.

Am I correct in saying that it's a good 3 hour drive from Sydney to bathurst? If so, that's gonna suck.

3hrs is a safely accurate yes, though with good traffic (especially over the Blue Mountains) you can cut a fair bit of time out of it

That's pretty ridiculous on Ch 7's part - honestly, there must be some running joke in Australian TV circles regarding motorsports coverage, and each channel taking turns at how badly they can botch something and get away with it. Remember Ch 9 a few years back, showing the same 10 lap segment of the Italian GP twice over for some reason that was never fully explained. It'd be comical if it wasn't so irritating.

Who cares if the action is 5 minutes behind? Seriously (the channel 10 pun not intended)

It does when Euros you happen to be chatting with who are watching on a web stream happen to be a lap ahead. Other than that though, it doesn't bother me that much.
