From this pic it looks to be just before the final turn, so coming off the dog leg.

That is the final turn as you can see the grid spots.

Very nasty crash and not the way for Oran Park to be remembered for.

Dumbrell leaves practice for brother
Release date: 05/12/2008

HSV Dealer Team driver Paul Dumbrell left Oran Park Raceway early to tend to his younger brother, Lucas, who was involved in an accident during a Formula Ford race this morning (Friday).

Lucas, who celebrated his 19th birthday only four days ago, ran over the back of competitor Chris Goodman’s car and rolled just seconds after the safety car was deployed on lap two of the 12-lap race.

It took a while to get the youngster out of the car to ensure his safety, but he was conscious when he was extradited from his Mygale Formula Ford.

After being stabilised at the scene, Dumbrell was transported to Liverpool Hospital where Doctors have completed a number of scans to determine the extent of his injury.

The key area of concern for the medicos at this stage is pain in Lucas’ back. He will undergo surgery tonight to further understand the extent of injury.

It is expected that tomorrow morning, Lucas will be transported to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Dumbrell’s family – along with members of the Sonic Motor Racing Services team – are at his bedside and said in a statement that they are extremely thankful for the outpouring of support they have received today.

BigPond Sport has been advised that Paul was on the scene of the accident almost immediately after it happened, and was taken up to race control to keep him informed of his brother’s condition.

Paul remained at Oran Park Raceway for the first two V8 Supercar practice sessions and left before the third one to visit his brother in hospital.

The HSV Dealer Team has tonight advised that Paul, who this weekend debuts a new #16 Autobarn Commodore, will return to the track tomorrow to resume racing.

He was hoping to finish his first year at the HSV Dealer Team on a high, but his brother’s accident means his weekend has taken a devastating turn for the worse.

Lucas debuted in the Genuine Ford Parts Formula Ford Championship this year after completing the Victorian Formula Ford Series in 2007.

He began racing in the Aussie Racing Cars series in 2006.

As per standard protocol, stewards will conduct an investigation into the accident.

Hmm actually operating on his back sounds bad, wonder if he crushed his Vertebra or similar like Denyer did.

Fingers crossed its just exploratory surgery which establishes no bad issues.

Anyway here is what Patrizi did to cause the red flag in the first session. From VMag.

What is everyone's favourite Oran Park memory??

In 1987 OP was the scene of the Lansvale Smash Repairs team's (now Tasman Motorsport) first touring car victory, when Steve Reed won the celebratory 25th Anniversay of Oran Park race....

which i have on tape

i have mixed emotions about this round

on one hand it looks like a ford championship, and im pumped to be watching this on tv

but on the other i was supposed to be there, but i got a new job and couldn't get the time off.

I still can't believe the dodgy times the Group C/A cars have been given to compete this weekend.

It's hardly much of the 'celebration' event that was hyped earlier in the piece.

The team repeated the feat a month of so later as well, Trevor Ashby won a heat of the opening AMSCAR Series round at Amaroo

I'm still yet to figure out my opinion of this race after all these years ;), as the whether it was an exciting race or a farce....

QUALIFYING SPOILERS
[spoiler]Qualifying is a bit of a mess at the moment.

Leg 1 - Dumbrell had an off at Turn 1, went through the sand trap, and hit the wall, not too hard though.

During this red flag, the power failed in the pits causing an extension of the red flag as no teams had timing.

Fabian Coulthard went off in the same place as Dumbrell, but didn't reach the wall.

At the end of the first leg, which took 50 minutes instead of 20, the order was

Leg 2 - Has been delayed for a good 10 minutes so far, due to another power blackout.

Finally green, after around 15 minutes.

I thought it was too good to be true having races longer than 120km. The further supp regs have 46 lap (120.52km) races instead of the 55 lap races initially listed.

Spectacular roll in the mini's, car just plain failed to brake for T2 and barrel rolled through the sand onto the tyres.
