The 2008 comes to a conclusion in what sadly is also the final round at Oran Park Raceway. The event has been extended to four days this year, with supports in the Fujitsu V8 Supercars, V8 Utes, Touring Car Masters, Formula Ford, Aussie Racing Cars, and the Mini Challenge all ending their 2008 championships this weekend. In addition there will be some on track action from the Group A and Group C cars of the past with 3 races across the weekend (albeit in poor timeslots).

In the main game Jamie Whincup is 67 points shy of securing his first title and only a Hamilton-style disaster will see Mark Winterbottom take the championship from him. The retiring Mark Skaife will be hoping for a vast improvement on recent form at a track that has served him well in the past. Two drivers hoping for a repeat of last year’s success will be Lee Holdsworth who took his maiden victory, and Shane Van Gisbergen who made his debut here and impressed everyone with his skills in the wet. All in all it should be a great end to the season, and one would hope this great track is sent off in style.

Final round at Oran Park ever. I will miss it for sure, its one of the iconic tracks on the series.

What will happen to it after the race?? Will it be demolished quickly or what??

What you talking about?

It's being flattened some time next year for a housing development. Has been known for 3 years

Best races ever, come on :)

As scotty said, the track will continue to operate next year. There is a round of the Shannons Nationals scheduled for August 2009. It is 2010 that the building is expected to start, and even then OP will be open for the first half of that year (CAMS licence not expected to be renewed for 2010 though)

For some reason V8Supercars seem to think that it is their duty to have the 'final celecration' after they 'farewell' meeting that the track is finished, nothing could be further from the truth. So many people seem to think the track closes after the 2008 V8Supercar meeting, its the VESA propaganda machine at its best again.

I remember my first trip to Oran Park, watching qualifying for the 1988 series round there.

Bring the V8 Supercars to the Thunderdome....thread over.

I noticed a lot of Australian tracks are great fun to race on Toca Race Driver but not so much fun actually watching a race there.

So maybe that's their problem, designed to be fun from behind the wheel, but not so much with overtaking and close racing in mind.

Oran Park is awesome, goodbye crossover bridge *sigh*

I reckon that the 2001 QLD 500 was pretty good as well, as Barry Sheene was going crazy.

Don't forget Eastern Creek. That's the worst track in the country by far.

One thing to mention, its all well and good to criticise a track for no passing but is it always the tracks fault? Surely some of the blame lies with the current V8 formula. The amount of 'parity' and 'controlled components' is a perfect recipe for nose-to-tail-without-passing racing.

Eastern Creek is good circuit, and you can actually see alot of the track from certain spectator points. The problem is VESA have drummed no much negative press about the place over the years that people just believe the hype....

Amaroo Park 9/10 (awesome run up the hill, too many fatalz tho)

Only ever two fatal accidents at Amaroo, one of which was a spectator in 1986, when Graham Watson & Peter Hopwood clashed heading up the hill during a heat of the Australian F1 Gold Star. Hopwoods car rode up the bank and into the crowd.

Something would have had to have been done to the place long-term though, especially the run up to the lake corner, with a rockface starring right at you as braked.

Warwick Farm ??/10 (racer69 might know something)

Warwick Farm was a great circuit, full of quick flowing corners.

Some footage of the track here http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=UNhYNzBd-t0

Also alot of the "Classic Australian Touring Car Races" DVDs from Chevron feature races from there, if anyone wants a look at the track.

Bits of it still remain, but most of it has been lost since the racing circuit was closed by the horse club in 1973

The old Surfers race track was very entertaining. Very fast and flowing. To be fast you had to have no fear though T1 (Taken flat at around 230kph). Any fear in taking that corner usually ended in disaster.
