Sandown Raceway hosts the 49th running of the Penrite Sandown 500 - the annual retro round for the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. This will be the final Sandown 500 under the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship banner for the time being, as The Bend knocks Sandown out of the PIRTEK Enduro Cup calendar for 2020. In total, there has been 45 touring car editions of the Sandown 500 to this point with the others running as CAMS Production Car races or under the Nations Cup for GT racing.

Supporting the throwback weekend includes the Dunlop Super2 Series, Paynter Dixon Touring Car Masters, CAMS Australian GT Championship, Toyota 86's and a demonstration run for classic Touring Cars.

Several teams once again will take part with throwback wraps, including: Tickford Racing (Alan Moffat's Mustang on the #55), Walkinshaw Andretti United (HRT colors from the late 90's), Team 18 (Roush Racing colors from 2004 NASCAR season), Erebus (John Player Special BMW throwback from the mid 80's), Brad Jones Racing (OzeMail throwbacks for the #14 & #21, while the #8 runs Fujitsu colors), Tekno (Bob Morris / Channel 7 throwback from 1979) & Matt Stone Racing (2009 colors).

Seems there's a medical issue somewhere around the track as the ambulance has gone out and the red in GT quali is still out.
