That's terrible.

It would have been better for the car to launch over the other one, rather than taking the full impact of the gearbox area. Damn.

That's awful. I know everyone hopes for the best but it was honestly hard to imagine (for me at least) that this outcome was fully unexpected.

Terrible outcome, but glad he is still alive. Not to be insensitive but it raises some questions for me. First for the incident, why was that car standing there? Had he spun or grounded to a halt? The TV coverage was really not helpful to get any more info. If it's the second, was there no chance to pull of onto the grass or did the car just lock up completely? And second, are drivers not insured for stuff like this? I imagine a good health insurance is priority number one in a dangerous sport like racing.

That's sad to hear. But unfortunately, given the ferocity of the impact and the length of the extrication, not a surprise.

They've passed £100,000 on donations already.

It's not the news we wanted to hear, but I think it's fair to say it is the news we all expected to hear.

I hope to see him return to the track one day. As Jason Watt and Alex Zanardi have shown, losing your legs, doesn't have to stop your career.

Racing drivers don't tend to have life insurance, I know several who have been forced to "retire" over the years because they were unable to find insurance and mortgage companies would not give them mortgages without it, and when you can get it, it's really expensive. I don't mean to sound insensitive because my heart goes out to him, but considering where he lives, they're not short of a few bob anyway so insurance was probably never even considered, even if available.

Maybe I'm being naive here but...shouldn't the NHS cover his medical bills?

I understand the lifestyle changes will require his family to change some things around the house while he grows accustomed to his prosthetics and whatnot, but I just assumed the healthcare system would cover the majority of his actual treatment for the physical trauma.

Yes, but there's always the option to go private.

The cost of his healthcare will be paid for by the state but the recovery, especially the physiotherapy, will be rather basic if just done on the NHS and if he still wants to race cars, it would do him best to go private.

The money could also be put towards adapting any cars that he may end up racing in the future.

An artificial coma is common in cases like this, helps with the healing. They did it with Zanardi.

I do wish these people who make big donations did so privately and directly, since it would allow Billy to recerive the full amount instead of justgiving skimming off their cut.

Guess that solves the Carbon Tub/Tube Frame debate from a few years back when Gidley had his accident.

Slam a car into a stationary car and you're gonna get real hurt, regardless of construction.

Saw a post on Facebook from the team manager confirming Billy hasn't got health insurance.

Really a freak accident. If the car had launched he probably would have been fine, but the gearbox of the other cars just punched straight into the monocoque, which I've not seen before.
