Saw a post on Facebook from the team manager confirming Billy hasn't got health insurance.

Really a freak accident. If the car had launched he probably would have been fine, but the gearbox of the other cars just punched straight into the monocoque, which I've not seen before.

Freak is the word - I think if he had hit at any angle other than this specific one, he would have gone around or over.

It's one of those things that has such a slim chance of happening that nobody ever gives it a second thought, and every solution has a potentially aweful outcome as a side effect, raise the tub so it goes over the gearbox and then you have the potential for it to clear any cockpit side protection in a t'-bone shunt, leave the design as is and add a crushable structure to the gearbox and you risk the car submarining under the stationary one etc.

I must admit I was always a bit more nervous of the carbon tub cars becasuse as strong as carbon is, there is no give and once it breaks, you might as well be sat in a cardboard box for all the protection it's going to afford you, I grew up in the steel tube spaceframe chassis era and although that also has it's downsides, at least there was give in impacts and it always afforded you some sort of protection no matter how bent out of shape it was.

What a spirited young lad. :)
If there's one positive aspect of his accident, he's world famous now at least. Looking forward to see his progress in the future.

And Lewis

That's one good thing about this sport, we may spend all day throwing shit at each other about which driver/team we think is great and which we don't rate, but when something like this happens we all come together and stand as one family

As for the accident, i'm not sure if there's going to be a forensic investigation, but there was a number of factors involved, including the fact it was just starting to rain, which probably caused the first car to spin and may have effected Billy's vision with water on top of the fact he was nearly completely obscured from being able to see the stationary car because he was in a pack

But i guess now isn't the time to play CSI:Motorsport and just get behind the poor lad.

Martin Brundle mentioned this less high profile but also life changing accident on the Russian GP qualifying coverage. Not sure if it's been mentioned here but I couldn't see anything.

Quote:
Weʼre raising £50,000 to help Craig Walker and his family during his recovery from injuries sustained at Castle Combe on Howard's Day 2017

On Bank Holiday Monday, just 24 hours after young Billy Monger's terrible accident at Donington Park, Track Attack Race Club driver Craig Walker was involved in a multi-car accident at the Castle Combe circuit in Wiltshire, in which he regrettably sustained injuries including three broken vertebra in his back.

Thanks to the incredible work from the Castle Combe marshals, medical team and officials he is now being treated in hospital. However it seems that the efforts to stabilize his damaged vertebra were not successful and at this moment in time the doctors have advised his wife and Craig that there is still the possibility he will suffer long term permanent disability. It is understood that because of the spinal cord risks they are unable to operate as they would like. They are making further/renewed efforts to stabilize his spine with the hope that he will improve in the weeks ahead.

Clearly whatever the outcome long term, and we of course hope for the best, he will be in for a long period of recovery of many months. Also Craig has recently changed jobs and was on a probationary period so therefore financial security will be of concern to Rebecca and his family. So the Track Attack Race Club and Downforce Radio have decided we should try to raise funds for his recuperation in a similar fashion to the initiative setup to raise funds for Billy Monger.

If the motorsport community can pool resources for one young star who will live with a permanent injury throughout the remainder of his life, surely we can do likewise for another racer who could also have his life changed forever. We hope that the world of club racing and British motorsport will unite and rally round Craig Walker and his family in the same manner.
