I wasn't expecting this.

Campbell joins Red Bull HRT in Pirtek Enduro Cup coup

Porsche sensation Matt Campbell has won the prized ride alongside Shane van Gisbergen as co-driver for the 2017 Pirtek Enduro Cup.
After earning his stripes alongside Todd Kelly in the trio of Supercars endurance races – Sandown, Bathurst and the Gold Coast 600 last year – with Nissan, Campbell has landed the most sought after co-driver seat in the field.

“I am so excited and grateful for this opportunity with the championship-winning team,” Campbell said.
“There is no doubt that it is going to be a big year, but after my debut in Supercars last year I do feel that I was able to gain the experience for what is required of me in this position.
“To be able to drive with the 2016 champ is pretty awesome.”

Campbell career was given a massive boost last year when, after winning the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia title, he won a seat in the Porsche Supercup in 2017.
The European-based Supercup which predominantly runs on the undercard at Formula 1 weekends avoids any clash with the Supercars long distance races.

Red Bull Holden Racing Team Managing Director Roland Dane says the 21-year-old ticks all the boxes when it comes to co-driving with van Gisbergen.
“We’ve been watching Matt for a while now and have been super impressed by his speed and maturity driving a range of different cars,” Dane said.
“The chance to have such a great young talent driving with us this year was too tempting to pass up.
“Plus he was Shane’s number one choice to share his Red Bull Holden Racing Team Commodore. We try to give our drivers what they ask for.”

Defending Supercars Champion van Gisbergen has his eyes fixed on bringing home the Pirtek Enduro Cup for consecutive years after being paired with Alex Premat last year
“Last year you could see that in every race Matt was fast and consistent, and that’s what you want,” said van Gisbergen.
“The enduros pretty much set up the championship. To have someone who is fast and doesn’t make mistakes is a no-brainer, especially when so many points are riding on it.”
Campbell has been busy preparing for his first season competing in the Porsche Supercup in Europe.

“It’s been quite a busy off-season readying myself for my first season racing outside Australia, keeping up my training for a big year ahead,” Campbell said.
Red Bull HRT are set to launch his new look in Melbourne on Thursday.

IMO this is a pretty big move. Matt's only experience in an Aussie Supercar was in last year's enduros with the Kellys. He is clearly a very talented driver though, so it could be a real stroke of genius from Roland.

GRM to Holden, big shock

So we're at 14/25 Holdens and back to 3 "manufacturers"

shame that Volvo wouldn't let them run their engines for another year. I think it will be back up to 4 manufacturers in a few years though (given the Kia rumors with GRM for '18)

Was there any truth to the story a while back that the RBR F1 car used matte paint because it had some sort of aero benefits?

It's lighter and I think recent advances in paint have reduced the friction of the paint so it allows them to put the weight elsewhere, plus matt paint is all the rage.

Not sure about the turquoise pattern, it has a bit of a shitty camo/marble effect to it.

In pictures of debatable interest news, the guy who does the Fox Sports V8 coverage car renders (https://www.facebook.com/ssmediaAUS/) has rendered a 2018 Commodore Supercar:

A while back he also mocked up a Mustang V8SC:

So according to comments on Ten-Tenths and supercars.com Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport (the only team yet to confirm their driving pairing) will be running Matt Chahda and Alex Rullo next year.

If that is true, then I'm fairly certain that would be the worst driver pairing in the main game for a number of years and LDM is in a lot more desperate place then I realised (and I knew they must have been in some trouble, there was an article on Heimgartner last year saying that LDM wasn't paying him for driving their car and that he was working a second job during the week to get by.)

Well, it appears that the requirements for the CAMS superlicense don't matter if your daddy is rich.

Matt Chahda was slated to drive for Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport
http://www.speedcafe.com/2017/02/09/cha ... cars-seat/

until this
Quote:
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) has refused a dispensation for a Superlicence by Matt Chahda for the 2017 Supercars Championship season. This was communicated to his team yesterday afternoon.

In considering whether to grant the dispensation, CAMS is required to satisfy itself that there are exceptional circumstances to support a decision to waive the minimum requirements. CAMS has determined that there are no exceptional circumstances to support a decision to waive the minimum requirements. It is the opinion of CAMS that Matt Chahda has not demonstrated the necessary driving skill and competency to support the dispensation requested.

CAMS values the safety of competitors, officials and fans above all other considerations.
