This season can't end quickly enough for Marco. What a horrible, underwhelming performance it has been, on a bike that is clearly capable of winning races.

Great ride by Rossi, especially given he doesn't always like the wet. Looked like Hayden had the measure of him early on (and Hayden is always competitive at home), but Rossi was smoother and you knew it was only a matter of time. Hilarious timing on the red flag.

The conditions were atrocious though, and all credit to the riders for having the guts to go out there. After practice, a lot of the talk seemed to centre around calling off the race before it even began if the weather was this bad, so it was good of them to go out and give the fans a show. Shame about the 250s, one less race where Simoncelli can get screwed by the Spanish brigade though.

Bloody hell has it been a disappointment, Marco used to be up competing for wins on the 1000cc bikes back in 2005/6 so, he can clearly ride I have no idea what's gone wrong this season but, he has had a shocker ...

It's as though he hasn't ever had confidence in the bike - I think he's afraid of throwing himself off in a big way and getting hurt. The thing is, the Ducati has for the last few years been an increasingly easy bike to ride (at least compared to what Bayliss and Capirossi were running a few years back), and he should have been able to sort out any setup issues by now.

To think he did so well on the satellite spec Honda for the last few years, I just can't figure out why he's struggling so much. That said, Stoner has been the only one of the 4 Ducatis on the grid to really get anywhere this season, apart from Elias's contract-signing form in the last few GPs, so perhaps it's a development issue, and nobody but Stoner can properly ride the bike they've designed.

Have to remember that Capirossi really struggled with it last year and was generally in the mid-field while Casey was up front for the whole year, and Capirossi rode the fearsome old Ducatis and could have been a championship contender, was a multiple race winner in 2006 ...

Still, Marco is really struggling to an even greater extent and whilst I suspect it is a difficult bike to ride (none of them can be easy) and maybe Stoner is almost uniquely suited to it, I would have expected Marco to get on with it by now as Elias seems to have done to some extent ...

Not sure how much of a yardstick Elias is, really. He had a totally dire season in 2006 on the Gresini Honda, then in Portugal, came out of nowhere and not only beat Valentino Rossi, he out-raced him in a straight dogfight for the win. Similar turn of events at Misano this year, with an inferior bike, after generally being nowhere for the entire season. When contract time rolls around, he seems to be a different rider, and while I hate to be cynical about him, he always looks like he's putting in more of an effort at this stage of each year.

Looking at it from the reverse perspective, Melandri has his Kawasaki deal sewn up and isn't racing for his ride next season, so even if there was one great race in him before the season is out, I doubt he'd put himself in any risky situations.

Capirossi, though, is a comparison that is probably a lot fairer - we know he always puts 100% in, and as you say, he struggled for much of last season, perhaps not as badly as Marco has this year, but it was still a struggle all the same. Perhaps this is proof of where Ducati's priorities lie at the moment, as much as it is an indication of Marco's inability to get to grips with the machine. Sad too, he was my favourite 250 rider in the post-Rossi era, and I really do think he's got more to give at the top level.

I hope to see Marco back on form soon, his 05/6 races were offen spectacular and i remember Rossi saying he though Marco was quickest of the "new guys" at that time.
