Not much else you could do there but a temp chicane for the bikes.

Could they extend the air fence farther out toward the race surface?

I don't have an answer but I'm sure people are asking these questions right now. That part of the track is dangerous for bikes or cars because of the way it's laid out.

Wow, that's all I can say for the Moto2 crash and especially the MotoGP one. I've watched racing all my life and never seen anything like that one with Rossi just missing death twice.

What the fuck...

That section can be straightened out by moving the track from T1 to T2 further to the right and moving the barrier

There is a shortened version of the track where there's a horseshoe turn that leads from between turns 1&3 over to turn 6.

I would rather them not change anything, but I won't be surprised if they do by either running the short circuit or adding a chicane between 1 & 3.

That would be a rather short circuit.

And does that config actually exist? That picture is from Racingcircuits.info but it doesn't even know the length.

That cutout is there.

Article I read was making the argument for bypassing T1-T3... By rebuilding the original layout over the hill.

EDIT: Complete side note, Vinales did an amazing job, through blind luck, not to crash himself. He let go of the bars and covered his head as Zarco's bike went right in front of/over him. Tough stuff to let go of the bars, grab your head, sit the bike up, on corner exit no less and not lay it down. He must've just seen that cartwheeling heap of junk out of the corner of his eye.

would be a knee jerk reaction to change the track now. there have been plenty of motorcycle races at this circuit in the past and there never was a similar a crash like this, so of course the circuit is unsuitable for motorcycles.

wonder if there would be the same discussion if it happened at catalunya or mugello where the top speeds are a lot higher than here.

Yeah I agree. Just like Pocono.

Ducati have really shot themselves in the foot by letting Dovi go. He's been shortchanged by them for far too long, with a Enzo Ferrari type attitude of just be fortunate you get to pilot our magnificent vehicles. While they paid Lorenzo way more than him to come and run last most of the time, while Dovi was the only one to give Marquez a legitimate title fight.

Yes silly indeed. I like the Ducati bikes and I really like Dovi. Will be interesting to see where he lands. Will KTM fire Pol and put him on the factory bike next to Binder? Maybe Aprilia will pony up the dough and get him (they were talking that on the broadcast.) Ducati is foolish since Petrucci is nowhere on the same bike. Meanwhile Dovi is 2nd in points with a real chance to take the lead this weekend.

KTM firmed up their 2021 line-up already this spring: factory bikes for Binder and Oliveira, Lecouna and Petrucci on Tech 3.

Aprilia is the only feasible option for Dovi, as noway he'll be riding for Avintia.

And at Aprilia, he won't even get the same dosh as he did at Ducati (or at least not the amount he was asking that broke negotiations) so it's a lose-lose for both Dovi and Ducati.

the issue is that the track curves to the left before the Remus curve and the barrier doesn't stop something coming across ala Heidfeld/Sato

they changed the gravel trap at that area some years ago and made it a lot bigger.

if they put a wall there to prevent bikes/cars going back on track the results would be even worse as drivers/riders would crash head on into something solid.

Agree, you cannot put a solid barrier there. That was my reasoning behind extending the air fence. It still didn't stop Morbidelli's bike, but it sure slowed it down. Perhaps adding another farther out could help?

I know it was a bit of a freak accident, but freak accidents expose weaknesses and provide opportunity to improve safety.
