I got both of Larry McReynolds' books for Christmas and I just finished The Pursuit of Perfection. There was some interesting stuff in there from his time as a NASCAR Crew Chief that I didn't know about like almost being the crew chief for Davey Allison before the 1990 season instead of joining the team during the 1991 season. Also, I learned how much NASCAR teams looked out for each other, like Dale Earnhardt's team among others were willing to help Robert Yates' Racing unload their backup car after Ernie Irvan had his crash at Michigan in 1994. There are a lot of other stories like that in there. It's an easy read that keeps your attention and covers a lot of his life in and out of NASCAR.

You know what I miss?

Absurd Jayski rumors from the late 90's/early 00's, where he would just post whatever nameless sources that pops out of the woodwork in order to garner traffic. Something like...

Jeff Gordon LEAVES HENDRICK?; to F1 in 2001?; driver swap with Hakkinen? UPDATE 3 A reliable source tells me Jeff Gordon was in the local Mercedes-Bens dealer in Charlotte this weekend; but he drives a Chevy?; strange... (StoneColdFan316/Charlotte Observer)(01-17-2000) UPDATE 11 talked to a representaive at the Charlotte Mercedes dealer, person in question was actually a GEOFF Gordon, not Jeff; I was immediately escorted off the premses HOWEVER Geoff Gordon could be Jeff Gordon using an alias; could be negotiating F1 deal with McLaren-Mercedes in the dealership to avoid major media attention; perhaps why they kicked me out hmmmm (Jayski)(01-23-2000) UPDATE 36 heard from a reliable source in the F1 community that Mika Hakkinen was spotted a half-mile from a Chevy dealer in Brazil during GP; likely negotiating driver swap with Gordon to drive the #24 in 2001 (StoneColdFan316/Brazil Observer)(03-25-2000) UPDATE 42 sources within Hendrick Motorsports say Rick Hendrick wants Hackinen so much that he is willing to cut ties with not only Jeff Gordon but also BGN driver jimmie Johnson who has a development deal in order to make it happen; the feeling is that Hakiinen a "phenomenal stock car talent in the making" and that he will win "at least" 8 Winston Cup championships (StoneColdFan316/Charlotte Observer)(04-01-2000) UPDATE 67 Gordon to McLaren F1 is likely a DONE DEAL; CNN is reporting that Mercedes is expected to make an "important announcement" tomorrow (CNN)(05-12-2000) UPDATE 68 apparently the "improtant announcement" is for a voluntary recall on all C-Class sedans between 1995-99 due to faulty volume control knob BUT this may be a cover-up for the Gordon/McLaren deal to be made later (Jayski)(05-13-2000) UPDATE 97 hearing that Gordon/McLaren deal is NOT happening BUT only because Hendrick is actually negotiating to BUY McLaren; the team will be rebranded as Hendrick-Mercedes F1, will have Gordon and Hakkinen as the drivers; could this mean David Coulthard to the #24? hmmm (StoneColdFan316/Charlotte Observer)(05-13-2000) UPDATE 107 went to Colthard's mansion in Scotland to get confirmation on the #24 deal; was immedialty mauled by attack dogs, which should put an end to those rumors HOWEVER sources say this is likely a cover-up and that Gordon/Hendrix/McLarne-Mercede/Hakinnan/Coldhart is a DONE DEAL and that it will be announced next week (Jayski)(06-09-2000) UPDATE 108 hearing the announcement will NOT happen this week and instead will happen next week (StoneColdFan316/Charlotte Observer)(06-16-2000) UPDATE 109 hearing the announcement will NOT happen this week and instead will happen next week (StoneColdFan316/Charlotte Observer)(06-23-2000) UPDATE 110 hearing the announcement will NOT happen this week and instead will happen next week (StoneColdFan316/Charlotte Observer)(06-30-2000) UPDATE 145 hearing that StoneColdFan316 does NOT work for the Charlotte Observer but only posts in their comments section; reportedly has been banned sixteen times for posting fake NASCAR rumors (Jayski)(07-04-2000) UPDATE 146 sources tell me I've been given the run-around for the past six months by an unreliable source and I'm a complete idiot for falling for it; sorry folks! (Jayski)(07-05-2000)

Good times.

Charlotte Motor Speedway attempted to revive the old Convertible Division back in the late 90's. Here's rare footage of Dick Trickle and Dale Jr. having a match race in those cars on the legends oval.

Edit: there's also one of Joe Nemechek and Kenny Wallace as well:

A pretty wild ARCA race from my old hometown track, Louisville Motor Speedway. There are multiple instances of the leader spinning out.

Some of those predictions are way off

We're not even at half a jillion miles an hour nearly 50 years later. Phooey!

this was one of Humpy's weekly exhibition shows for the Summer Shootout as a intermission between the Legend Car / Bandolero / Thunder Roadster features. Essentially, the weeks where they didn't run school bus or spectator races; they would do stuff like this (knowing the NASCAR guys would be a draw to get weekly fan attendance (and also a draw for the live/next-day TV coverage that they had on FOX Sports Net). Lasted through the 2002 season if I remember right
