But Dale had a phenomenal season in 2000 finishing 2nd to Bobby... A remarkable response to a shit few years he had after 1996.

If you ever watch "The Day" about Dale Earnhardt and the 2001 Daytona 500 they mention his neck surgery after the '99 season. He had a pretty hard wreck at Atlanta that year too where it chipped a bone in his neck I believe.

Yeah I remember that. Crashed in turns 3 & 4.

Spent this morning watching a lot of the 1993 season. Remarkable how the season was dominated by just a few drivers. Earnhardt, Wallace, Martin won 21 of 30 races. 10 by Wallace. Rusty pretty much won once every 3 races.

I decided to play catch up with missed Nascar races and started from 1990. It was such a great year and times from what I'd seen. The young guns and others not so young liked to race for track position from lap 1. That's the biggest change from nowadays. Now, Ryan Newman it's the only one doing and its like he is a retard for other drivers.

A lot of guys traded the competitive fire for the big money and the status quo (B. Labonte, Biffle), or forgot where and how they came through the ranks and got on people for pulling the same shit they did (Hamlin, Ky. Busch).

Track position is more important than ever today (unfortunately) but that means they race harder than ever so I don't know where this myth about them racing harder in the old days came from. They used to take care of their stuff more in fact back then until the end. Now equipment is better so there's not much of that to worry about. Newman just races for nothing sometimes, self-defeating in a way. Racing a guy for 17th like it's the last lap, holding them both up and eventually leading to an incident or letting three other guys catch up and probably pass as he's used his stuff up.

I'll admit it... I'd be ok if Ryan Newman left the sport forever.

Cheers for the link to the '79 National 500, I had the World 600 from that year but not that one.

The '85 Daytona 500, a race where keeping up with Bill Elliott was a big challenge.

I don't think we'd see a race like this today.

And since Texas is this weekend, why not relive the lap 1/turn 1 derpfest of the first race?

Does anyone know why Texas had that weird dotted line in 1997? Starts at the start/finish and stops off turn 4.

How about Irvan having a dumb moment here in the 97 race...

The 98 race was a crashfest as well. The huge crash on lap 2, Mike Skinner with HUGE impact after a RF failure and Greg Sacks with a HUGE side impact in T2. Greg had to be cut out of the car.

That crash Greg Sacks had in '98 at Texas messed him up pretty bad. It basically ended his career.
