If you ever watch "The Day" about Dale Earnhardt and the 2001 Daytona 500 they mention his neck surgery after the '99 season. He had a pretty hard wreck at Atlanta that year too where it chipped a bone in his neck I believe.

Spent this morning watching a lot of the 1993 season. Remarkable how the season was dominated by just a few drivers. Earnhardt, Wallace, Martin won 21 of 30 races. 10 by Wallace. Rusty pretty much won once every 3 races.

Track position is more important than ever today (unfortunately) but that means they race harder than ever so I don't know where this myth about them racing harder in the old days came from. They used to take care of their stuff more in fact back then until the end. Now equipment is better so there's not much of that to worry about. Newman just races for nothing sometimes, self-defeating in a way. Racing a guy for 17th like it's the last lap, holding them both up and eventually leading to an incident or letting three other guys catch up and probably pass as he's used his stuff up.

Does anyone know why Texas had that weird dotted line in 1997? Starts at the start/finish and stops off turn 4.

The 98 race was a crashfest as well. The huge crash on lap 2, Mike Skinner with HUGE impact after a RF failure and Greg Sacks with a HUGE side impact in T2. Greg had to be cut out of the car.

That crash Greg Sacks had in '98 at Texas messed him up pretty bad. It basically ended his career.
