So it's NASCAR's 1st off weekend of the year. And with all the debating talk about today's racing, a little wine in me,, I jumped on YouTube to watch some classic races. I decided to watch the 1997 Southern 500. It sparked an idea that it would be great to discuss races from the past. Post clips, discuss the racing and storylines. Maybe this catches on, maybe it doesn't but hell, let's see.

So I'll start with this being the first race with the front and back stretches being swapped, the beginning of this race and Earnhardt's episode, and Jeff beating Jeff for the 2nd Winston million. Does anyone remember what exactly happening to Dale? I was at Riverside Park Speedway at Riverside Amusment Park in Mass that day and hearing rumblings it was a heart attack. Clearly it wasn't but it sure was major talk.

Sure, have a look at his press conference a few days later.

Dale had such a hard time from 1996-1998. I grew up viewing him as invincible and when he went winless in 97 and with the injuries and this, it showed me otherwise

Not to mention what happened in the 2001 Daytona 500...

I'd rather not remember that day...

But Dale had a phenomenal season in 2000 finishing 2nd to Bobby... A remarkable response to a shit few years he had after 1996.

When Dale failed to win in 1997, it was so odd.

Yeah, you'd think he'd still be the same fierce competitor we all know.

Dunno what's with him that season and that broken collarbone suffered in Talladega in the summer did not help matters, either.

The 1997 Goody's Headache Powder 500 from Bristol Motor Speedway, imo the best intro to any NASCAR race.

Pretty great race too.

I decided to play catch up with missed Nascar races and started from 1990. It was such a great year and times from what I'd seen. The young guns and others not so young liked to race for track position from lap 1. That's the biggest change from nowadays. Now, Ryan Newman it's the only one doing and its like he is a retard for other drivers.

This one, from 50min mark. It looks like it's 10 to go. Rather young Rusty Wallace, Earnhardt, Mark Martin, and Allison, Kulwicky and Irwan. All going for it, or at least the top 5 that were made of some of those.

Great racing for the lead throughout most of this one.

Seeing Earnhardt take the lead from Childress... Something about that seems odd but neat.

The 1990 Winston Open: Dick Trickle and Rob Moroso fight it out in perhaps their finest hours in the Cup Series.

SUCH a great final segment to that race.

Not surprising since Charlotte was Rob Moroso's best track. He won there 3 times in BGN. Had a great showing here, and started 10th for the Coke 600. Blew an engine late and finished 26th.. Sadly he never got the chance again. The very next race after his fatal highway accident was Charlotte.
