Jr is pissed, he said if the racing was like that every week he would quit and that Nascar should build the cars if they're gonna wreck that many at once to save the owners money. A reporter said that the fans like that type of racing, and he said that we're blood thirsty if we like that.

In French. A distinct lack of oh-la-las.

They just showed an Earnhardt Jr. interview on ESPN News. It was fucking perfect. Said if the racing was like this every week he'd find a different job; said if NASCAR wanted to keep it this way they should just build all the cars on their own dollar; and that if the fans liked the finish they were just bloodthirsty.

Now even though I thought it was a decent race, I generally agree with him. Plate racing the last few years with the old car was good because of the way the cars could separate a little bit and handling actually mattered a bit too (until they repaved Talladega, and remember Daytona was still rough until 2011). The two car tango was boring, dumb, and dangerous, so the current package seems great by comparison. But even though the tandems are now broken up the racing is still kinda fucked up because they're all packed more tightly than ever and it requires more effort to lose the draft than to actually stay in it.

I'm not complaining that the package isn't perfect. I understand it's hard to make the cars behave a certain way without other consequences and with NASCAR wanting to keep the speeds in a certain range it limits their options greatly. But it needs to be better because the way it is now is just a 490-mile cruise fest (which is fun in its own way at times) with a guaranteed clusterfuck for the last ten laps. Someone called in during "Dialed In" on Sirius NASCAR early this week and said Talladega shouldn't be in the chase because it's a straight up lottery. I thought that was ridiculous hyperbole. But after watching that race today I'd have to agree with him.

Talladega should be the chase finale, that way the preceeding races would be just setting the stage for the big race.

Imagine that finish if it also decided the champion.

Plus there'd be some nice poetry in starting the season at Daytona and ending it at Talladega

Apparently the Roush plane took off with the cargo doors open, and luggage went flying everywhere. Oopsie.

Talladega as good as it gets. Today was great but there will always be something wrong with the racing there in people's minds until people accept that it is a complete spectacle that chews up race cars.

Junior and any other driver who wants to whinge about it can go get another job (I'm sure Junior has many non-racing skills that would find him a job in the fried chicken industry) or just accept that they are NASCAR drivers, and this is a big part of why NASCAR drivers get paid so well and keep getting sponsors. If they don't like it they can fuck off to Grand Am and get by on 1/10th the paycheck.

There's good, hard racing and there's driving like a bunch of idiots. The finish fell on the latter.

You really think that wreck was caused by idiotic driving? Put the best 40 drivers in the world at the top of their game in the same situation for 500 miles and watch the exact same thing happen.

I bet if they all made it to the line without wrecking, you would've said it was good, hard racing.

^ (was actually trying to press the quote button, ha)

anyway, i think juniors comment has more to do with the wrecking or winning being more "luck" or "chance" rather than "skill" or any lack thereof.

we all know that superspeedway races don't have a lot to do with skill , but thats how it is.

Pretty much. It was a glorified Powerball session, that's what.

If they were going to take Dega out of the Chase, a totally worthy candidate would be Rockingham or swap with the Glen

Theres nothing wrong with a plate track in the Chase, every track needs to be in there and if you wreck tough luck it happens to everyone. There are too many boring 1.5 mile tracks and Dega is just something different.
