Fair point too, but the fact that they were sitting still for so long should have given time for the officials to get on the scene. Though thankfully they didn't since Busch was dumb enough to do what he did.

NASCAR.com journos, getting tough on the issues.

Is there some place I should be going for real journalism on this sport?

Jeff Gluck, with a dose of Raygun Swan on the side.

Seriously, it's hard to say. Even the best go into ass-kissing mode from time to time.

i would assume that nascar has rules in place about their officials intervening in an altercation while drivers are still in their vehicles or on track.

Couple of notes on the situation after hearing some discussion on the Sirius NASCAR station...

Kyle Petty was on the morning show yesterday and he made a really good point about the officials' lack of action on pit road. The drivers had made a move for pit road, jumped back to the track for a good 30 seconds, then went back on pit road and just sat for a fairly long time. Yet at no point were any officials really on hand in time to do anything about it. Petty made the point that most other sports will have officials jumping right in to stop altercations as soon as they see trouble. Anyway, in all the madness I never really even noticed the lack of action on their part and I think it's a great observation on KP's part.

what he fails to point out is that in other sports you don't have the off chance that an official could get knocked into next tuesday by a spinning automobile. i assume they were staying away because they were afraid they were going to fight using their cars instead of their fists.

And given Kyle was happy to punt Kevins car out of the way and completely out of control into a barrier, I'd say that the officials made the right decision.

And the great thing is, with NASCAR's complete constipation on real punishment officials can continue to fear for their lives around cars post-race.
