The problem there was when you had a stuck throttle. Also, the plates probably shouldn't be that big, now that we know how crappy the race turned out...

Why an overreaction? Because what were the plates going to accomplish? Plates weren't going to cure stuck throttles and corner entry angles. Vehicles going a few MPH slower still had vicious impacts on corner entry. See Dennis Setzer's accident below... The pole speed for that Truck race was very close to the pole speed of Bobby Labonte in the Cup race with the plates.

Actually, I was asking why NASCAR would put plates on the XF cars at Indy. My fault, didn't properly express that.

Plates at Indy was something I was wondering that could improve racing there for more than a couple of years now. Might be very good.

Do restrictor plates even cause pack racing (which I assume NASCAR is aiming for here?) if you're not on full throttle for 100% of the lap?

Even with plates they'll need to at least lift for the corners with how flat Indy's banking is compared to Daytona/Talladega....so what's the plate gonna do to improve racing?

Clutching at straws here, but someone hypothesise for me! :whistling:

Doubt it. Cup cars need the power off the corner to even encourage overtaking at flat tracks. Indy's just a terrible place for stock cars for that reason alone--track's too big and flat for any of that to happen. Plates would make it worse since the whole point of the restrictor plate is to reduce power.

But they are also adding some drag increasing gimmicks. Lets see...

next they'll probably have a speed limit on the track to make better racing

Well, not exatcly drag inducer, but actually a way to make the car in front leave a bigger hole in the air (but still in a more aerodynamically way than those ugly top bars), I'm really looking forward for this race. Reminds me of some good nascar races like Michigan 96 or one vintage charlotte video where everybody stayed more close toguether.

They tried that. Didn't work.

Honestly, they should lighten up the cars a bit. There's no reason why the cars *have* to be at 3500lbs...sure would help acceleration coming off the corners, especially at Indy...

Idk if theyd do that. Probably cite that the lighter cars would be easier to take off if air got under them when turned around.

They tried a higher downforce package at Indy a couple of years ago, and it was absolutely terrible. It didn't create slingshots down the straights and nobody could follow each other in the corners.

The hilarious thing is that this season's package would have helped. Less downforce = higher speeds at the end of the straights but slower in the corners, which is the best chance of creating overtaking at Indy.

The only thing I can possibly think of is that they weren't happy with the thought of the cars pushing 205 - 210mph going into the sharp corners. If it's a genuine attempt to improve the racing, then the decision makers have no idea how racing cars work.

From an overall standpoint that was BY FAR NASCAR's worst week of racing. From a racing standpoint Texas was probably worse. But holy cow, both races gt ruined by uneeded rules effecting (Affecting?) the finish.

The last Sunday in May used to be fun from start to finish. But for at least ten years or so I am always feeling kinda empty after the 500, because the 600 is utter poop.

It hasn't really been fun since that caution-fest in 2005, and that was obviously an anomaly in its own way.

Yea, for me it's all about Monaco and Indy that Sunday. Coke 600 is not a contender against those two marquee events, in terms of prestige nor excitement.

Probably time for a new tradition: Monaco, Indy, dinner, and then watch a long movie you've been meaning to see. Much more satisfying in total.

I just go to sleep and watch the 600 over the week in smaller chapters or in a quarter of the screen while doing other stuff.

Only time that I tried to watch it live was when Junior ran out of fuel, I slept with 200 to go and woke up just to get the end spoiled, as it happens most of the time that I sleep during a race.

Brazillian broadcast helps a lot with the boredom as well, and the video on demand is actually 40% shorter with all the comercials being cut out.....
