I was wondering why there never seemed to be any mention of paralysis. Such a shame, but it's good to see him facing it with a positive attitude.

From what all Shane has been through before and after this accident, he should be an inspiration to everyone on how having a positive attitude can carry you very far in life. Get well Shane "The Real Deal" Hmiel :flag:

On one hand this is heart breaking to see, on the other hand it is an inspiration of what is possible if you don't give up. The crash should've killed him. The Good Lord apparently has other plans.

Good luck Shane. Wishing you the best.

In the pre-pre race show on SPEED, they said that on Thursday's Race Hub there will be a special feature about Shane and his recovery story.

Last night, Levi Jones, driving Shane Hmiel's car won the 3rd Annual Gold Crown Nationals at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL. The win came 1 year to the day of Shane's accident.

Still amazed after reading the initial reports a year ago, how far Shane has come, and how level headed he has been about it all.

Probably helps that he's been through hell and back with the addiction. Not to say this is easier overall, but he has experience with adversity.

According to pics from the recovery facebook page, he's now walking with assistance.

Yeah he stood up with out assistance this morning I believe.

Its a long shot, but you never know. He has determination that I will never have.

Great to keep seeing him progress every time this thread is updated. Originally seeing the crash and reading the reports, I'm not sure anyone could have imagined things would be progressing so well for him.

The second test in this video really puts the Hmiel crash in a whole new light. (Video may not be for the squeamish)

That second test was hard to watch, but it really does put a new light on the wreck. I wonder what they could do to improve safety on that end, the top-side impacts.

^ I was debating that with my buddy yesterday actually. Look at how the cage fails. The tubes buckle at the top of the dash, but the lower frame rails also twist like pretzel dough. In a cage first impact, at least based on how that crash test came out, it's not one part of the car but the whole damn thing that failed. The A brace behind the driver buckled, the A posts failed, both lower frame rails bent... The only part of the cage that didn't bend was where the brace comes back from the A post to the top lower frame rail. A better cage can certainly be built, but anything I can think of off the top of my head compromises the speed of driver exit.

Perhaps Racefan4ever can chime in with some insight. He's connected with the Sprint Car world closer than I am. I know I need to forward this video to some SuperModified guys. Their cages are often braced poorer than a Sprint Cars is.

As for Shane, I never though that kid would get out of that wheelchair. So glad to hear how he's doing. That boy's seen hell a couple of times.

What's crazy to think is that he was actually in a Silver Crown car (with an engine), so it had even more mass slamming through the "roof" than the motor-less Sprint Car chassis in the video.
