They used a grinder on the track and it produced to lanes to race on. I think Rusty's win in 2004 (spring) was the last race before they paved it again due to the chunk that took out Gordon.

best part about that happening, besides gordon crying like a big ol besh, was the interview with morgan shepherd during the red flag. it was very manly, he was too old school to take his suit off or drink any water.
