I took a video on my phone as fast as i could when I saw how fast he was going. I got his 2nd lap which was slower, but still obviously faster than any normal plate track speed I've witnessed.

man do you realize how many views on youtube that would get? maybe someone else got it.

I'll have it up on YouTube later tonight. I'm really bummed I didn't get his first lap around on video though, he was up to speed by the exit of turn 2, and when you normally here the car lugging at the same rpm's down the backstretch his car just kept building more.

The other cars were running noticeably different speeds throughout the day so I know NASCAR was experimenting with plate sizes to go with the shortened spoiler. By the end of the test (around 6pm ET because the morning session was shortened by rain) there was very little spoiler left at all, and all 7 cars were running nose to tail and at times side by side. Also David Ragan's car wasn't damaged and he returned to the track after changing tires.

Here is a quick screenshot of a pic I took of Jr's car, you can get a feel for how short the spoiler got.

Looks the overall spoiler shape was rounded like the old car.

Here is the video I DID get of Joe's run, it was shortly after he ran an even faster lap. I was still shaking a bit because my adrenaline was going hardcore after seeing him run through 3-4 a good bit faster than in this video, and in a shower of sparks.

If you turn the volume up you can here him lift halfway down the back straight, then accelerate again halfway through turns 3-4. Again... this does no justice to his first lap. Also I apologize for the red dot on the screen.

Watch in HD.

If I had to guess what the lap time was... The video is 24 seconds long, and thats from turn 2 exit into the tri-oval. The track record is a 42.78 lap at 210mph. I would guess this would be close to that time.

And here is a clip standing down by the fence in turn 4. :p :flag:

Wow, those cars were really flying around the track. They were clearly faster than any speeds I've seen at Daytona in a long time. Thanks for the videos. I wish some offical speed data was released.

From Jayski:

Q) What have you learned so far from today's test session at Daytona?
Logano: "We learned that when you take a spoiler out of a race car at Daytona it makes the car go faster. We were going 206 or 207 or so. We've been doing that, taking the rear spring out of the car and just taking downforce away from these things. Trying to get away from that two-car draft. We're slowly getting away from the two-car draft, making it harder to do it. I guess we've made gains today because that's what NASCAR is looking for."

I had a tape with some qualifying from Talladega in '98 or so... man, those cars back then had their rear ends down in the ground, and the rear tires weren't 100% visible. It was crazy.... they changed it up before the race, of course, but what was described by Joey Logano above reminded me of that.

Yea, they looked like lo-riders, lol.

I remember that well. Sparks flew everywhere during qualifying, and it was awesome.

is it just me or do the cars sound more aggresive in those clips?

NASCAR.com has an article about the test as well. They said Nemecheck and Truex ran qualifying runs with a 1" restrictor plate and were extremely excited about the speeds they reached, but NASCAR was not. :p

If Joey said they were going 207 (they didn't do any qualifying runs) I can imagine the 87 and 56 were going quite a bit faster.

Also, the cars definitely sounded more aggressive in person, I assume it was due to the higher RPM's they were reaching. Especially the #87's run.

Quote:
Nemechek runs 203mph at Daytona test....alone: #87-Joe Nemechek, a driver/car owner, reached 203 mph without a drafting partner during Tuesday's test session at Daytona International Speedway. The day was supposed to belong to NASCAR as it tested various setups in an effort to break up the two-car tandem draft. But instead, Nemechek was the talk of the garage and what it might mean for qualifying if Tuesday's changes are implemented for the Feb. 26 Daytona 500. "We were changing the restrictor plates and all kinds of stuff," Nemechek said. "I mean, (the speed is) just the product of putting more horsepower to the back tires. I think we're going to be quite a bit faster when we come back here for qualifying day. It's going to be interesting. All the teams are going to have to do some more homework." Nemechek was testing with Triad Engine Development, a North Carolina-based company. "We were using a 1 1/16-inch plate and a 3-inch radius spoiler," Triad Racing Development head engine builder Jon Dysinger said. "This was better than we expected."(Daytona Beach News Journal)(11-16-2011)

Thanks! I'm wondering how "official" that speed is, because it sure seemed faster than that. Then again he did lift for the corner.

Definitely looking forward to Speedweeks '12. :)
