Interesting comment from Elliott Sadler about his happy hour crash at Michigan in 2000.

While it would be a weird thing to lie about, I have to say I just don’t believe this is true.

He's lying... The onboard shows enough of the wreck. He lifts, goes over, then starts flipping. He's not going further up after the car is obviously hitting the ground each flip. I don't know whether or not he hit the fence..but if he did, it's not the first nor the last time that's happened.

And I would say NASCAR's had much closer calls with Dillon/Larson at Daytona and Edwards at Talladega....and they use that footage to promote their races.

Yep, in his 1983 Twin 125 flip, I think he said he flipped 21 times and in the 1993 Daytona 500 flip he flipped 38 times. Or something like that, if I recall.

So Rusty Wallace syndrome is basically Hulk Hogan syndrome, when he talks about slamming the 10,000 lb Andre the Giant in front of 50 million screaming Hulkamaniacs (brother).

according to Kenny Sargent on the SpeedFreaks show tonight (at 32:24); sounds like Texas Motor Speedway could be getting the dynamite treatment after next year

Need to fix the cars, not the tracks.

Have you actually watched any races with the new car? Car isn't really the problem anymore, at least not compared to dumps like Texas.

In this case, not really. The racing on the intermediate tracks this year has actually been phenomenal. The problem really is Texas itself. They butchered it when they reconfigured it a few years ago by making turns 1 and 2 insanely wide but lower banked. And then they used the PJ1 traction compound as a band-aid for years, and that left the surface badly stained and it results in even less grip when they don't apply more compound over it.

Yes and the races are crap, yes better than they was last year, but still crap. It’s why nobody is watching or posting in the race threads either (The Richmond race thread has 10 posts)./ You may love the races as they are but some of us don’t. Now the teams have figured out the cars it’s going to be even worse.

However Dan is right here, they screwed up this track when they reconfigured it.

The short tracks and road courses have been bad so far with the new car. (NASCAR even has tested at Martinsville with some changes to the aero for short tracks along with some tire stuff, so we may see changes in the future in that regard.) However, the racing on the intermediate sized ovals has actually been great in my opinion and from pretty much everybody else I've seen talk about it. The races at tracks like Fontana, Michigan, Charlotte, Vegas, etc. have been seriously good all year.

I actually think Texas might have been salvageable in its current form if they'd never put the PJ1 down on the track.

I fear Texas might just try to go the Atlanta route and give us a FOURTH SS track when we should really be trying to go in the opposite direction and keep that number at two (or zero, preferably).

I think it’s almost certain they’ll do that.

That's surely all NASCAR cares about, the cookie cutters are the meat and drink of the season and either they or SMI own them so they're interested in improving the racing product there and bringing the crowds back

If they hurt the racing for road courses or smaller tracks, oh well....doubt they even care that much

I feel this was inevitable after the admitted success of the Atlanta races. Charlotte will get it soon enough, you can bet on it.

To be fair, the short tracks and road courses were bad for the past few years under the old car too. Seems like more of a tire problem than a car or track problem, the tires just don't wear in any way that adds an extra dynamic to the race. And stage racing IMO has hurt short tracks and road courses more than any other type of event. It removes pit stop strategy at road courses, and removes the driver's mental time bomb from getting stuck behind a slower car with no caution in sight which usually leads to some sweet sweet punterino.

Tire wear wouldn’t explain why Richmond has been bad for a while. The tire falloff there is immense.

Sounds like Jr’s story, one too many concussions means this relatively minor one is going to take potentially months to recover from.

the cars have too much grip on the short tracks. they were testing the bristol dirt configuration where they get rid of the diffuser under the car and run that for the short tracks. they also might consider a different tire compound if it's still too much grip without the diffuser
