Everyone used to complain about it when it was like that. Kinda interesting that now everyone wants it back. I don't disagree, I'm just saying.

I personally enjoyed it. If you look at some of the plate races from the early to mid 90's, 5 or 6 cars would break away and run single file for a LONG time. It was boring as Fuck at times. Give me pack racing back anytime!

Thing is, when NASCAR makes a change that ends up making the racing worse instead of better, you start to look back and even appreciate the previous style that came before it, whether you were a fan or not.

Every style will have its fans and critics. It just depends on how loud and how many critics there are.

I'm pretty sure it was more of the drivers complaining about that type of racing than the fans.

They're probably not going to tweak the COT body just for 2 tracks. And ordering the drivers to not bump-draft will lead to a situation like the 2009 fall Dega race. The answer is definitely in the cooling IMHO, by banning or severely restricting the pressurized cooling systems that the teams have been running for the last few years.

Why not changing the body? For the old car it was different bodies for the plate races, and that seemed to work.

Yes, but the COT bodies are built to much stricter guidelines and was designed to use pretty much the same body at all tracks. So after making the changes, whatever they may be, aero-matching the nose for each make will have to be carried out all over again. Just my opinion that all that is way too much for NASCAR to bother doing for 2 tracks, that too for one season (since 2013 car will be new again). Besides, having bumpers intentionally not line up to create a more unsafe situation in the event of a bump will generate negative publicity.

Nascar returning to Rockingham? This might be what it takes to make it happen.

Quote:
Rockingham installing SAFER barriers: The Rockingham Speedway, which hosted NASCAR Sprint Cup races from 1965 to 2004, is taking a huge step toward once again hosting big-league racing as SAFER "soft wall" barriers will be installed next month. The energy-absorbing system will be installed in two phases, in mid-September and late December, covering all four turns of the one-mile oval and the inside of the backstretch wall. NASCAR requires racetracks to have the SAFER barrier in place before they can host one of the sanctioning body's top three national series -- Sprint Cup, Nationwide, or Camping World Trucks. Rockingham officials have had discussions with NASCAR, albeit informal, about the possibility of a Nationwide or Truck Series event returning to the track more commonly known as The Rock. A source within NASCAR, speaking on condition of anonymity, admits as much. However, the lack of a SAFER barrier had always been an insurmountable issue. Without the promise of a NASCAR race, Hillenburg wasn't confident enough to try and secure funds for SAFER installation. That now appears to have changed. NASCAR president Mike Helton told ESPN.com's David Newton that while he "wouldn't want to give anybody false hope," the installation of SAFER barriers "gives us more options."(ESPN.com)(8-16-2011)

Given how expensive SFBs are and how the track was already not doing too well financially, I'd be surprised if they made a move like this without assurance from NASCAR that it would lead to a NCTS or NNS date. Hope it's true. :)

More SAFER at Watkins Glen? NASCAR is talking to officials at Watkins Glen International about adding SAFER barriers and reconfiguring the angle of walls in key areas around the road course following Monday's Sprint Cup race in which there were two violent crashes. The governing body also is discussing the situation with engineers at the University of Nebraska that designed the SAFER (Steel and Foam Energy Reduction) barriers about what can be done to improve safety. The concerns came from two wrecks. The first involved #11-Denny Hamlin crashing head on into a tire barrier early. The one that brought the most concern came on the final lap in Turn 2. #51-Boris Said got into the back of David Ragan's #6 Ford, which bounced off a steel and tire barrier into David Reutimann's car, sending the #00 upside down into another barrier with parts flying everywhere. "We learn something every day on the possibility of what can happen,'' NASCAR president Mike Helton said on Tuesday from the NASCAR Hall of Fame where he announced plans to move the induction ceremony to January 20. "When you see something unusual like that you have to study it and see what's the better circumstance for that not to happen again. There are some areas, the engineers from the University of Nebraska have told us, where the SAFER barriers could be worse. We just have to make sure we do it right.'' Helton said NASCAR and the University of Nebraska are taking a hard look at where SAFER barriers could be beneficial and where re-aligning the angle of the walls will prevent cars from being thrown back onto the track. "There's some areas where a SAFER barrier isn't the best answer, particularly on a road course because of the uniqueness of going left and right,'' Helton said. "So far, at least from what we've been told, there are some areas that may not. That doesn't mean all the areas that need to be covered are covered, but SAFER barriers are not always the perfect answer for a situation.''(ESPN)(8-17-2011)

At least they understand that putting SAFER barriers everywhere is not the best and only answer. If they can redesign the wall David Ragan was turned into that would certainly be a good start. I'm surprised they didn't do anything with that after Leffler was turned into it in the Nationwide race last year and caused that huge pile up.

As for the wall Reutimann hit, it seems there's plenty of room there for them to back that wall up and straighten it out.

More of a gradual radius with the Armco would be a start, rather than using 45-degree angles to reduce the width of the track.

The TV always makes the angle look worse than it is. If you find an aerial shot of the circuit, that barrier is actually only about 20 degrees to the track. Not saying they shouldn't change it of course.

Danica to go full time in Nascar in 2012

Once her contracts are done, she'll be in Nationwide series in 2012 with Jr Motorsports, then in Cup series in 2013 with Stewart-Haas Racing.
