Leicht Sharing #29 with Burton in 2009: Stephen Leicht will join Jeff Burton as the co-driver of Richard Childress Racing's #29 Holiday Inn Chevy team for the 2009 Nationwide Series season. Leicht, 21, has run a part-time Nationwide Series schedule for RCR this year after earning his first career series victory and finishing seventh in the point standings during his rookie season in 2007. The Asheville, N.C., native has earned two top-10 finishes in just four starts this season driving RCR's #21 Chevy, including a seventh-place showing in April at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Ariz.

It sucks that Scott Wimmer won't be back in the 29 Nationwide car, but it's great to see a kid like Stephen Leicht get another opportunity after being fucked over by a) Robert Yates not fielding a Nationwide team and b) the 21 team shutting down after Talladega due to sponsorship issues.

The first three days of this week, NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton holed up with his technical lieutenants, revising the rulebooks, closing more and more loopholes, spelling out more and more no-nos … legislation upon legislation upon legislation …

It is well that Smokey [Yunick] died in 2001, so he didn't have to see this, the final strangulation of all things wonderfully innovative about NASCAR, under the guise of a crackdown on so-called cheating.

Very nice piece by Ed Hinton on the evolution of NASCAR into a spec racing class:

RCR finally made a good decision 8O

Leicht will be ten times better than Wimmer ever was.

Carpentier says he's a free agent: Canadian #10-Patrick Carpentier says “It’s over,” at the end of the year, after his one season with Dodge car owners Ray Evernham and George Gillett. “They hired Reed Sorenson for next year, so it’s over,” Carpentier says. “They’re working on a fourth team and looking for sponsorship, but you know how that goes.” So Carpentier says he’s a free agent. “I’m talking with other teams to see what’s out there,” the Montreal native says.(Winston Salem Journal)

Way late on this one but I'm curious to hear Joey and mdp's opinions on Tony Stewart's "little" career move since you were both already gone from the old forum when it was announced.

Stewart-Haas will be solid next year, probably getting Tony into the chase. The team's problem has never been equipment, but incompetent management and sponsorship issues and both of those have already been solved.

I can't see Carpentier in Cup next year.

Maybe not in a full-time ride, at least.

If they had Leicht running the full season, he'd probably battle Logano & Keselowski for the championship.

plz die Holiday Inn.

I'm saying that they should ''die'' based off of their insistence of having Burton in the car rather than running Wimmer or Leicht full-time.

I also guess this means that Richard Childress wants Austin Dillon in the #2 full-time if they bring him in next season.

In a perfect world the #21 would have a part-time sponsor and they'd run Leicht in it for the races Burton has.

I believe the 66 will be the 14, and the 70 will be the 4.

I think that if Riggs gets into the Top-35 by seasons' end, then that'll be the #39 for Newman. Stewart has the PCP, after all.

Yeah Childress is the one who really needs Nationwide sponsorship. Jeff Burton really needs to run Nationwide races, you know.

they lost AC Delco after the 05 season, Coast Guard after the 06 season and AutoZone after least year. of course, we don't really know that, if they had sponsorship for another car, they wouldn't just run another Cup driver in it while screwing over development drivers (a la Roush).

tbh if Roush would stop signing every sponsor known to man, the #21 would probably still be in the field (albeit with either Leicht or Labonte).

Oh yeah, you're right. Citi was taken in by Roush too.

If they get both the US Army & Subway to sponsor Earl I will rage so fucking hard.

I don't think this has been posted yet. Ole Jr.'s got it right.
