Did I read they'd treated the track surface again, or is that just for a future race? :?

This track is a total mess and has been since the day it was built.

Can someone explain what sucks about this track so much? Asking honestly. I don't find it special by any means, but there are definitely worse tracks out there *cough* Martinsville

Oops. 4-wide through turn 2 doesn't work.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

They did reconfigure the track after relentless storms damaged the track so much that they can't even dry it properly. It was fine...but then NASCAR had to reduce the power of the engines (and slapped them with a large spoiler to boot) to promote pack racing. Predictably, the racing sucked. Instead of unfucking the problem at hand, SMI thought it's a good idea to lay the PJ1 traction compound on the track to encourage drivers to utilize a second groove. It didn't work. Turns out that IndyCar doesn't like the stuff. So they cleaned it off, but it left a hideously noticeable stain where the compound lies, so basically, they turned it into a one-lane track. Except that if you venture out of that groove, you're wrecking.

Rumors are swirling that they need to repave it again to get rid of the residue. Which, honestly, they don't have a choice. The current fear that the next reconfig may turn Texas to Atlanta II.

Have a look at the track design itself.

The banking into the corners goes from nothing to 24 degrees then at the exit it goes from banked to nothing very quickly. This creates not only pinch points but heaps of aero push so you can't get a run off the corner if you push up. This feature has been there since the track was built.

The hideous reconfig a few years back took banking away from T1-2 which made the aero push and pinch off 2 problem even worse. If you've ever driven the track on iRacing, the entry to 1 feels like a 90 degree corner. It might be 10 lanes wide but it's only one lane in reality. This corner also makes it impossible to get a run on anyone due to it being slower.

This track also decided that PJ1 was a good idea and it did nothing plus it also killed IndyCar races apart from this year.

Then you have the politics of those who run the track - SMI. They stole a date from North Wilkesboro to bring this place into existence and the first race had a huge wreck on lap 1 which was pretty ominous. Then it was given a second date because some shareholder files some lawsuit. Said shareholder didn't even show up to the second race, go figure.

This is also the track that started CART's downfall.

I see. I was aware of the reconfiguration, and it does seem like a wide track that only has one lane, but never heard about that PJ1 compound fiasco. So they knew the track sucked, tried to make it better, and only ended up making it worse. I remember when IROC raced there back in the late 90s the track didn't seem that bad. I've heard bad things about the track amenities as well (like not enough bathrooms), but if I remember right I believe they've corrected them. Might be wrong on that one though.

Kyle Larson said the other day that they should tear the track down and build a short track.

And now simultaneous failures.
