I was pondering a few hours after the race, why do guys like Elliott and Logano care so much about winning at Daytona that they pull fuckwit blocking moves for the slim chance it will work out in their favour? I get dudes that may never have a shot at winning at a normal track doing whatever it takes (Chris Buescher) but when you've won a few and even won a championship, what does winning at Daytona or Talladega add to your ego? Are your driving peers really gonna give props to you in interviews or quietly reflect afterwards, 'Gee, I wish I had the mad skills Chase showed when he was willing to wreck the high line to hold onto the lead, that's winner's instinct man.'

Honest question, I have no idea why these guys think winning at a superspeedway is any sort of achievement. I always respected guys like Mark Martin for taking the view, "Fuck this place, I'm gonna get through here and focus on winning at a real track next week."

I don't think they think like that, just that kind of driving has been completely normalised by now and the package encourages is because if someone gets by you and you don't block them, you lose about 10 places at least, it's just subliminal now.
It's not like it's unique to Daytona/Talledega either, they do it at other tracks on starts/restarts and the 1 or 2 laps where they're all packed together before they spread out, it's just restrictor plate tracks mean it happens 200x more often

Also you can't deny that the same track as the Daytona 500 has more prestige in winning than some 500 mile race at bumfuck nowhere, and as you know that kind of racing brings out more fans to the track, so they will enjoy winning more here than in front of less fans elsewhere too

Also also, we don't know if these tracks pay more in prize money to win too lol

You're overthinking it, IMO. They're all just insanely competitive. It's part and parcel being a professional athlete/competitor.

Yeah, even more so 1 race before the playoffs, it's time to show who's the boss, and get momentum.

They are just racing hard for a win. Any driver would race hard for the win, given the chance.
