Eh, it was a racing incident. He put his nose in an open spot and the contact was so slight. Bad luck.

For all the problems they ran into from having a dirt track race on a track that isn't really a dirt track... that ended up being a really entertaining race. I'm looking forward to next year being on the dirt again.

Make some changes to the cars so we can have a track with bite in it. Other than that, I was not displeased with what I saw.

That was a tough job to get the place whipped into shape and I did not think they would do it. Pleased to be wrong there.

Leave the dirt. Make some changes for drainage, etc, and make it a permanent dirt track. They'll go back to selling the place out for the night race.

Just out of curiousity, if they were to convert it to a permanent dirt track would they need to rip up the asphalt? What's under the surface of a proper dirt track, just more dirt?

Yeah, usually just more dirt. The black stuff isn't asphalt, but rubber on the track (we like to call it the blue groove), and actually provides less grip if driven on. That's why you'd typically see cars move either higher or lower to find the tacky stuff since they like wet dirt more than dry dirt.

No, not necessarily, plenty of good dirt tracks were paved at one point and still have their paved surfaces underneath.

notable good examples: Fulton, Revolution Park, Ocala (don't think they ripped it up), Albany Saratoga - there's many others as well (Volusia might be one - can't say that with certainty though).

on the specials side:
Bristol has gone relatively well this go-around - so far (2000 & 2001 went well from what I remember too). It's also Bristol so it's going to be pretty sketchy regardless, especially for proper dirt cars given the speeds when the track has bite. Ultimately the track showed exactly what I expected over the past 2 weeks with it being more locked down on the bottom - honestly that's down to the banking though.

(IMO: Stlll kinda hope the Winged Sprint Cars are a one & done deal for Bristol (I doubt it would be solely to give more people a chance to attend as there's many that won't be able to with COVID) - yeah it's a track that's suitable for them in the region (there's only like 5 suitable for a proper WoO Sprint Car show between east TN, NC, SC, GA & VA) - but TBH it's also something that's not suitable safety wise w/ the speeds (basically what they hit at the miles - which hasn't been on the WoO schedule since 1994 for safety reasons) & honestly will have a lack of passing from dirty air.)

Oswego has improved over the last few years & has showed pretty good racing with Super DIRT Week. Berlin in past was mixed from what I remember in regards to how it's raced. Rev was originally specials only I believe but with how well the WoO race was last month - no way in hell they take the clay up there.

a dirt track with less banking would work well with those cars?

WoO Sprints work excellent at flatter tracks like Knoxville.

Cup Cars and the Trucks need banking or they're just going to slow as hell. I don't think Knoxville is going to be that good of a show for the trucks, but I've been wrong before.

If there's any bite in Bristol when we go down there for the Sprints, I am staying on the infield... Front axles can travel a long way.

Well, Milwaukee is a mile so that would probably work well. The mile dirt tracks are all flat and ARCA races on them pretty well.

Nah, NASCAR would want to find a 1-mile+ track that has a ton of luxury suites to profit off of, and it needs to have prestige so they can hype it up like crazy, even if the track is completely incompatible for auto racing.

Yea, I was thinking of DuQuoin and Springfield in ARCA too. Stockcars, as they are now, need a dirt track that's either flat but big (DuQuoin/Springfield) or short and banked (Bristol/Eldora), but Martinsville dirt would be a complete goat rodeo, IMHO. They barely make it around their properly on asphalt but on the dirt, it'd be a complete amateur hour.

williams grove is basically martinsville dirt so inb4 stupid ideas are tried on iracing
